China fines Ford joint venture in latest hit on US firm

5 June 2019; AFP: China on Wednesday imposed a $23.6 million fine on US auto giant Ford's joint venture with Changan Automobile for "price fixing" in the latest incident of Beijing targeting an American company amid a festering trade war.

The fine, amounting to four percent of Changan Ford Automobile's sales in the southwestern city of Chongqing, was levied over violations of China's anti-monopoly laws.

China issues U.S. travel alert

BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Tuesday issued a travel alert for Chinese tourists traveling to the United States.

Noting the frequent occurrence of shootings, robberies and theft in the United States recently, the ministry warned Chinese tourists of the risks of traveling there.

Chinese tourists are urged to learn about the public security situation and related laws and regulations of tourist destinations, to raise their safety awareness and step up precautions to stay safe.

The travel alert is valid until Dec. 31, 2019.

China completes first offshore rocket launch

QINGDAO, June 5 (Xinhua) -- China successfully launched a rocket from a mobile launch platform in the Yellow Sea off Shandong Province on Wednesday, sending two technology experiment satellites and five commercial satellites into space.

A Long March-11 solid propellant carrier rocket blasted off at 12:06 p.m. from the mobile platform. It is China's first space launch from a sea-based platform and the 306th mission of the Long March carrier rocket series.

China steps up defense of rights amid trade tensions

BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education on Monday warned students and scholars of the risks of going to study in the United States citing U.S. visa restrictions, urging them to step up risk assessment and make corresponding preparations.

The alert states that the visa applications of some Chinese hoping to study in the United States have recently been restricted, with an extended review process, shortened validity period, and an increased rejection rate, which have affected their plans to study in the United States or the completion of their studies there.

Dialogue, consultation only way out to resolve Iranian nuclear issue: China

BEIJING, June 3 (APP): Taking note of the latest statements on the dialogue between the United States and Iran, a Chinese foreign ministry’s spokesperson Monday stressed that the confrontation was not the way out and dialogue and consultation was the only the correct way to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue.

USTR, Treasury defend Trump strategy on trade row with China

BEIJING (AP) — The U.S. Trade Representative and Treasury Department have issued a statement defending Washington’s strategy in its trade dispute with Beijing.

The statement seen on the USTR’s website Tuesday said the U.S. was “disappointed” by a report China issued over the weekend that accused the American side of backtracking in negotiations.

The two sides are in a stalemate after 11 rounds of talks over trade and technology issues that have led to both sides raising tariffs, among other retaliatory measures.

Tech group eases stance on Huawei as Beijing lashes back

BEIJING (AP) — The world’s largest association of technology professionals backed away from barring staff of Chinese tech giant Huawei from some of its activities as Beijing fired back at the U.S. over the two nations’ trade dispute.

Data releases Monday, meanwhile, showed a widening fallout from the clash between the two biggest economies over China’s perennially huge trade surpluses and its efforts to leap ahead in advanced technology.

China refuses to rule out force over Taiwan reunification

2 June 2019; DW: Chinese Defense Minister General Wei Fenghe said Sunday that his country would not renounce the use of force over the reunification of Taiwan with the Chinese mainland.

"We will strive for the process of peaceful reunification with utmost sincerity and greatest efforts but we make no promise to renounce the use of force," Wei said.
