China’s youth face bleak job market as COVID slows economy

BEIJING (AP) — Liu Qian, job-hunting with a new master’s degree, said two employers interviewed her and then said the positions had been eliminated. Others asked her to take lower pay.

She is one of 11 million new graduates desperate for work in a bleak job market as anti-virus controls force factories, restaurants and other employers to close. The survivors are cutting jobs and wages.

“Am I not worth it?” Liu asked. “From the moment I started looking for a job, I felt as if my future were smashed by a machine, and I don’t know if I can piece it together.”

China reaffirms threat of military force to annex Taiwan

Beijing, Aug 10 (AP-PTI) China on Wednesday reaffirmed its threat to use military force to bring self-governing Taiwan under its control, amid threatening Chinese military exercises that have raised tensions between the sides to their highest level in years.

The statement issued by the Cabinet's Taiwan Affairs Office and its news department followed almost a week of missile firings and incursions into Taiwanese waters and airspace by Chinese warships and air force planes.

China, Pakistan to strengthen youth exchanges

BEIJING, August 8 (APP): China and Pakistan are making efforts to strengthen the people-to-people exchanges between young.

“Youth exchanges between China and Pakistan to strengthen youth exchanges. China and Pakistan are very important, which is the foundation for the continuation of the iron friendship between our two countries,” said the Pakistani Ambassador to China Moin ul Haque.

He made the remarks at a cultural night titled “Meeting Colorful Pakistan” held recently at the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing, China Economic Net (CEN) reported on Monday.

China extends threatening military exercises around Taiwan

BEIJING (AP) — China said Monday it is extending threatening military exercises surrounding Taiwan that have disrupted shipping and air traffic and substantially raised concerns about the potential for conflict in a region crucial to global trade.

The announcement further increases uncertainty in the crisis that developed last week with U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

Taiwan is not a part of U.S. but Chinese territory, says Chinese foreign minister

BEIJING, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said on Sunday that Taiwan is not part of the United States but Chinese territory, in the latest diplomatic invective against U.S. policy since a visit to Taiwan by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The United States has been engaging in "sophistry" on the Taiwan question, and China's actions on Taiwan have been just, appropriate and legal, as well as being aimed at safeguarding the country's sacred sovereignty and territorial integrity, Wang said during a visit to Bangladesh.

Chinese company offers free solar power plants at Bahawalpur hospital

BEIJING, Aug 06 (APP): China’s renewable energy solutions conglomerate Zonergy has installed four solar power plants at different buildings of BahawalVictoria Hospital in Bahawalpur district of Punjab province.

The plants, having a total peak generation capacity of 325kW, have been installed by the Chinese company free of cost under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agreement with the government of Punjab, China Economic Net (CEN) reported.

China denounces U.S. as "unprovoked provocateur and creator of crisis"

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Friday that the context and the events that led to the tensions in the Taiwan Strait are crystal-clear. The U.S. is the unprovoked provocateur and creator of the crisis.

Spokesperson Hua Chunying made the remarks at a daily press briefing. "The current situation is entirely caused by Speaker Pelosi and other U.S. politicians," Hua said.

Hua said the Taiwan question is not about democracy, but a major issue of principle about China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Thousands stranded in China resort city amid COVID lockdown

BEIJING (AP) — Some 80,000 tourists are stranded in the southern Chinese beach resort of Sanya, after authorities declared it a COVID-19 hot spot and imposed a lockdown.

The restrictions came into force on Saturday morning, as authorities sought to stem the spread of COVID-19 in the city on tropical Hainan Island. There were 229 confirmed cases on Friday and an additional 129 on Saturday.
