Bengaluru, Nov 18 (PTI) Amid demands from some quarters for RBI governor Urjit Patel's resignation, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance Veerappa Moily Sunday said if he quits over the stand-off between the top bank and the Centre, it will send a bad signal to global markets.

"If Patel decides to resign over its (RBI) differences with the central government, it will be a very sad and bad for the Indian economy.

Mumbai, Nov 18 (PTI) Former Union minister Arun Shourie Sunday said ex-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had a "great sense of remorse" for imposing Emergency, but the situation today is "graver" than it was in 1975-77.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's juggernaut can be stopped in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls if the entire Opposition unites and follows the principle of one candidate against the BJP in every seat.

Gadchiroli (Maha), Nov 19 (PTI) Two women Naxals were gunned down in an encounter with police commandos in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district on Monday morning, a police
official said.

The gun battle broke out between the ultras and C-60 commandos, a specialised combat unit of the Gadchiroli police, in Nihalkay forest area under Dhanora taluka around 8.30 am, Gadchiroli's Additional Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pandit told PTI.

The commandos were on an anti-Naxal operation in the area since Sunday night, he said.

New Delhi, Nov 19 (PTI) Over 270 fresh cases of dengue have been reported over the last one week in the national capital, taking the total number of people diagnosed with the vector-borne disease this season to 2,146, according to a municipal report released Monday.

Of the total number of cases, 551 were reported this month till November 17.

As many as 1,114 cases were reported in October only, the report said.

Also, 450 cases of malaria and 150 of chikungunya have been reported this season, it said.

KANPUR: As many as 3123 candidates have not appeared at the TET held at 64 examination centres here on Sunday. The examination was conducted in two shifts. This is a teacher eligibility test.

This entrance examination remains mandatory for securing teaching jobs in government schools from class 1 to class 8. Satish Tiwari, the Nodal officer told a total of 59,683 examinees turned up at the test in both the shifts.

KANPUR: Insanitary conditions in long-distance trains like North-East Express and Patna-Anand Vihar Special train enraged the passengers so much that they pressurised the railways' authorities to make cleaning instantly on Sunday.

On passengers’ deep distress at the poor state of toilet cleanliness in North-East Express the train was delayed for half an hour. All the sleeper and air-conditioned coaches were properly cleaned.

KANPUR: Several trains like Kalindi Express, Chauri Chaura Express and Ajmer-Sealdah Express remained late for more than an hour owing to breakage in the GMC fourth line on Sunday. GMC is a railway station code. Even this kind of break was also reported earlier on Saturday. Luckily Licchavi Express and Poorva Express passed on the track safely. The movement of the trains started only after the damaged track was changed.

KANPUR: Astroturf is a necessity for the hockey game. Keeping this point in view the Kanpur Municipal Corporation has planned to arrange Astroturf ground for hockey in the prominent Green Park stadium of the city.

What has drawn the attention of the hockey veterans towards this proposal is on its size. It is being told that the hockey’s artificial ground would be a little shorter in size than the standard dimension.

New Delhi, Nov 17 (PTI) A Delhi court on Saturday discharged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a defamation complaint filed by Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Chandra, saying Chandra had not followed proper procedure while filing his plea.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal granted the relief to the Aam Aadmi Party chief, noting that Chandra had filed the complaint through a power of attorney which is barred under law. The court said that Chandra was at liberty to file a fresh complaint in accordance with law.

Agra (UP), Nov 17 (PTI) A right-wing group has threatened to perform a puja inside the Taj Mahal, alleging that some Muslims have defied an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) notification banning namaz except on Fridays.

A CISF commandant said an inquiry was being conducted into the reported incident of namaz being offered on Wednesday.

The locals are insisting that they be allowed to go inside for prayers daily. Muslim leaders blamed the ASI for fomenting communal trouble on false pretexts.
