Lebanon: Unemployment, poverty rates reach 60% in Tripoli

11 Sep 2021; MEMO: The crime rate in Lebanon's northern capital of Tripoli has reached alarming levels as the country's economic collapse deepens.

The economic situation in the last few years has pushed tens of thousands of people into poverty and triggered large anti-government protests.

In Tripoli unemployment and poverty have risen to over 60 per cent since the government applied a strict lockdown to fight rising coronavirus rates.

Kuwait royal family member convicted of forgery in Geneva trial

11 Sep 2021; MEMO: A Swiss criminal court convicted a member of the Kuwait royal family on Friday, Reuters has reported. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah was found guilty of forgery. The power broker in international sports had been charged with using a bogus Kuwaiti coup plot to gain advantage over political rivals.

Israeli media: 4 Palestinian escapees captured, 2 at large

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli media reports say two more of the six Palestinian who broke out of a maximum-security prison this week have been arrested at dawn Saturday, leaving two prisoners at large.

The prisoners captured included Zakaria Zubeidi, a well-known militant leader from the second Palestinian uprising in the early 2000s. Photos showed Zubeidi and another unidentified man sitting on the ground, blindfolded and handcuffed. Armed Israeli soldiers in civilian uniforms posed behind them.

Egypt: Taliban kills ex-Vice President Saleh’s brother — report

CAIRO, September 10. /TASS/: The Taliban movement (outlawed in Russia) militants killed Rohullah Azizi, brother of former Vice President of Afghanistan Amrullah Saleh, Aamaj News reported Friday.

According to the report, Azizi was detained and later executed last night in the Panjshir Province of Afghanistan. No further details have been provided yet.

Iran Launches Artillery, Drone Attacks On Terrorist Bases In Northern Iraq

TEHRAN, Sept 10 (NNN-IRNA) – Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), launched artillery and drone strikes on terrorist bases in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil, semi-official daily, Hamshahri, reported yesterday.

The attack was conducted on Wednesday by the IRGC Air Force’s missile and drone units. Dozens of militants were killed or injured in the operation, according to an IRGC communique, quoted by Hamshahri.

The communique points to clashes committed by terrorist groups in recent months, in border areas, as the reason for the attack.

Africa's COVID-19 cases near 8 mln: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa reached 7,990,337 as of Friday morning, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, the specialized healthcare agency of the African Union, said the death toll from the pandemic across the continent stands at 201,971.

Some 7,241,169 patients in Africa have recovered from the disease, it was noted.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Ethiopia are among the countries with the most cases in the continent, according to the agency.

Turkey administers 100 mln doses of COVID-19 vaccines: ministry

ISTANBUL, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Turkey has so far administered 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines as part of the nationwide vaccination campaign launched in mid-January, the Health Ministry announced on Thursday.

According to the latest data of the ministry, 47.6 percent of the population has received two doses of vaccine in the country of 83 million.

Lebanon's PM-designate Najib Mikati forms new cabinet

BEIRUT, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati announced on Friday the formation of a new cabinet of 24 ministers, breaking over one year of political deadlock in the crisis-torn country, according to Lebanon's Presidency.

Mikati spoke to reporters at Baabda Palace, swearing that he will stop the country's collapse and spare no efforts to get in contact with international organizations to secure the country's basic needs, MTV local TV channel reported.

"We will work seriously on serving all people regardless of their sects," he said.

Turkey FM meets Syria opposition figures

10 Sep 2021; MEMO: Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu today met with Syrian opposition figures in the capital Ankara, Anadolu reports.

Cavusoglu met with Salem Al-Meslet, head of the National Coalition of Syrian Opposition; Anas Abdeh, president of the Syrian Negotiation Commission; and head of the Syrian Interim Government Abdurrahman Mustafa.

"Fully supporting Coalition and Interim government, legitimate representatives of Syrian people," Cavusoglu wrote on Twitter after the meeting.
