More refugees evacuated from Libya arrive in Rwanda

KIGALI, Nov 20 (NNN-Xinhua) — The fourth group of 79 refugees and asylum-seekers evacuated from Libya detention centers arrived in Rwanda late Thursday, the ministry of refugees said.

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, the refugees were taken to designated transit hotels for COVID-19 tests, and will be taken to Gashora emergency transit center in Bugesera District, south-central Rwanda, after getting their results, Olivier Kayumba, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Emergency Management, told national broadcaster Radio Rwanda.

Nigeria’s Southern State Vaccinates Millions Of People Against Yellow Fever

LAGOS, Nov 19 (NNN-XINHUA) – Health authorities in Nigeria’s southern state of Anambra, said, the state has vaccinated about 5.5 million residents against yellow fever, during a campaign against the disease.

The latest vaccination, which began on Oct 30, took place in 19 areas of the state, said Vincent Okpala, the state commissioner for health.

“Our target is to vaccinate about six million residents, and we hope to achieve that by the end of the exercise,” the official added.

African continent hits 2 million confirmed coronavirus cases

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The African continent has surpassed 2 million confirmed cases as health officials warn of infections starting to creep up again into a second surge.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that the continent had crossed that milestone. Its numbers show the 54-country continent also has seen more than 48,000 deaths from COVID-19.

The African continent of 1.3 billion people is being warned against “prevention fatigue” as countries loosen pandemic restrictions to ease their economies’ suffering and more people travel.

Ugandan politician and pop star Bobi Wine says he has been arrested

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Ugandan presidential candidate and pop star, Bobi Wine, who is seeking to replace long-ruling President Yoweri Museveni, was arrested on Wednesday while campaigning in the east of the country, he said on Twitter.

In two tweets, Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, said police had violently broken into his vehicle and taken him into custody.

Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“The price of freedom is high but we shall certainly overcome,” Wine, 38, said in one of the tweets.

Suspected bandits kill 11 villagers in northwestern Nigeria

ABUJA, Nov 17 (NNN-Xinhua) — A group of unidentified gunmen killed at least 11 villagers and wounded many others in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Kaduna on Monday, said a local official.

The gunmen, suspected to be bandits, raided the village in large numbers, opening fire on residents of the Albasu village in the Igbabi Local Government Area of Kaduna, said Samuel Aruwan, a commissioner for Kaduna State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs.

The gunmen also rustled flocks of cattle belonging to the locals, Aruwan said in a statement on Tuesday.

Ethiopia’s PM vows ‘final and crucial’ offensive in Tigray

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Ethiopia’s prime minister on Tuesday declared “the final and crucial” military operation will launch in the coming days against the government of the country’s rebellious northern Tigray region.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in a social media post said a three-day deadline given to the Tigray region’s leaders and special forces “has expired today.”

Ethiopia’s Tigray leader confirms firing missiles at Eritrea

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The leader of Ethiopia’s rebellious Tigray region has confirmed firing missiles at neighboring Eritrea’s capital and is threatening more, marking a huge escalation as the deadly fighting in northern Ethiopia between Tigray forces and the federal government spills across an international border.

Tigray regional President Debretsion Gebremichael, in a phone interview Sunday with The Associated Press, wouldn’t say how many missiles were fired at the city of Asmara on Saturday, but said it was the only city in Eritrea that was targeted.
