UN warns of looming famine in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations' top relief chief on Monday warned of a humanitarian crisis in drought-stricken Somalia, saying the country was on the brink of famine for the second time since 2011.

Martin Griffiths, under-secretary-general for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, told a news conference in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, that the severe drought ravaging the country is likely to push parts of the country into famine by the end of 2022.

Kenya's Supreme Court upholds Ruto's presidential win

NAIROBI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme Court of Kenya on Monday dismissed a petition challenging William Ruto as president-elect, paving the way for his swearing-in next week in line with the country's constitution.

A seven-judge bench unanimously agreed that Ruto met the constitutional threshold to be declared the east African nation's fifth president, putting to rest a weeks-long legal battle with his closest rival in the Aug. 9 presidential election Raila Odinga.

As Africa’s climate warms, rich countries pledge more funds

MOMBASA, Kenya (AP) — Rich countries said they will spend about $25 billion by 2025 to boost Africa’s efforts to adapt to climate change as the continent continues to struggle with drought, cyclones and extreme heat, according to officials at a summit in Rotterdam in the Netherlands on Monday.

Two bodies recovered from collapsed building in Nigeria's economic hub

LAGOS, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- At least two bodies were recovered from the rubble of a seven-story building under construction that collapsed in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, in the early hours of Sunday, an official told Xinhua.

The bodies were recovered by rescue agencies conducting search and rescue operations, said Ibrahim Farinloye, zonal coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency in the southwestern region.

Rwanda names 20 endangered baby mountain gorillas

KIGALI, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda on Friday gave names to 20 baby gorillas born over the last 12 months in an annual gorilla conservation event held at the foothills of the volcanoe mountains in the Northern Province.

The annual baby gorilla naming ceremony, commonly known as Kwita Izina, was held for the 18th time.

South Sudan’s Peace Monitors Approved Transitional Government’s Extension

JUBA, Sept 2 (NNN-SUNA) – South Sudan’s peace monitors, yesterday, unanimously voted to extend the Transitional Government by two years.

Charles Tai Gituai, the interim chairperson of the Revitalised Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC), said, two-thirds of the voting members in the commission, approved the extension, according to the procedures set out in the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.

WHO says traditional medicine key to easing Africa's disease burden

NAIROBI, Sep. 1 (Xinhua) -- African countries should harness traditional medicine that has proved effective in the management and cure of ailments afflicting the continent's population, a World Health Organization (WHO) official said on Wednesday.

WHO Regional Director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti underscored the critical role of herbal medicine in lessening the burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases in the continent.
