Floods, mudslides as storm wallops Southern California

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The second storm in a week brought record-breaking rainfall to parched Los Angeles on Thursday, jamming traffic on Southern California highways and prompting evacuations in wildfire-scarred areas.

A mudslide shut down Pacific Coast Highway and surrounding roads in and around Malibu neighborhoods charred by last month’s massive fire that destroyed hundreds of homes.

India 4th highest emitter of CO2

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) India is the fourth highest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, accounting for 7 per cent of global emissions in 2017, a study said Wednesday.

The top four emitters in 2017, which covered 58 per cent of global emissions, were China (27 per cent), the US (15 per cent), the European Union (10 per cent) and India (7 per cent), according to the projection by the Global Carbon Project.

The rest of the world contributed 41 per cent last year, it said.

CO2 emissions up 2.7%, world 'off course' to curb warming

5 Dec 2018; AFP: Global emissions of carbon dioxide mainly from fossil fuel burning will rise 2.7 percent in 2018, scientists said Wednesday, signalling a world "completely off course" in the fight against climate change.

Last year, CO2 pollution increased by 1.6 percent after a three-year hiatus that raised hopes manmade greenhouse gas emissions had finally peaked despite an expanding world economy.

Plan to maintain Ganga clear

KANPUR: An action plan to restrict the tossing of wastes and immersion of dead bodies is nearly ready. The Kanpur Municipal Corporation has been authorised to keep a vigilant eye over stopping this menace.

Wastes flowing through the Nullahs, throwing of litters and immersing of the carcass into the Ganga waters need to be controlled by December 15. This deadline should be followed.

India: Air pollution: NGT slaps 25 crore fine on Delhi govt

New Delhi, Dec 3 (PTI) The National Green Tribunal Monday asked the Delhi government to deposit Rs 25 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for their failure to curb the problem of pollution in the city.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel also asked the AAP government to furnish a performance guarantee of Rs 25 crore with the apex pollution monitoring body to ensure that there is no further lapse in this regard.

KATOWICE, Poland (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a dramatic appeal to world leaders Monday to take the threat of global warming seriously and to act boldly to avert a catastrophic rise in temperatures before the end of the century.

Guterres, who spoke at the opening of the U.N. climate conference in Poland, called climate change “the most important issue we face.”
