ELEFSINA, Greece, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Greece joined with two fire-fighting aircraft the fleet of the new RescEU system to tackle natural disasters across Europe.

During a celebratory event held on Thursday at Elefsina's airbase, near Athens, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides announced that the European Commission will in parallel support Greece in repairing two water-dropping Canadair type aircraft by allocating 2.25 million euros (2.5 million U.S dollars).

ATHENS, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Saturday pledged "growth for all", outlining his government's economic policy for the next 12 months, which includes tax cuts and reforms to support development in the post-bailout era.

The two Israelis – a 29-year-old and 35-year-old man who have not been named – were arrested yesterday in Hersonissos, a popular tourist resort on the Greek island of Crete, after the German teen filed a complaint to local police.

ATHENS (Reuters) - An Iranian tanker at the center of a confrontation between Washington and Tehran changed course again on Friday and was heading back to Turkey, shipping data showed.

The Adrian Darya, formerly called Grace 1, was now headed for the southeastern Turkish port of Iskenderun, tracking site Marine Traffic showed.

It is the third time the ship has changed destination in 10 days. Iskenderun is roughly 200 km north of the Baniyas refinery in Syria - the suspected original destination of the tanker.

ATHENS, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of the West Nile virus has risen to 10 in Greece so far this year, with 96 reported cases, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) announced in a report on Thursday.

All casualties concerned patients older than 60 years old, according to EODY's data. Four deaths were recorded in the past week.

Greek experts reiterated advice to the public to take precautions against mosquitoes.

The West Nile virus is transmitted mainly via bites by infected mosquitoes.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A big fire that spread quickly overnight in an eastern suburb of Athens appeared to be under control soon after dawn Monday.

The fire had raced up the slopes of 1,026-meter (3,366 feet) Mount Hymettus, which separates suburban Peania from the main city. Flames shooting up the mountain on what was a pretty extensive front could be seen from Athens early Monday morning. Alarm lights were flashing at the flat mountaintop, occupied by an army communications base and transmission antennas for Greece’s main TV stations.

ATHENS, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The first energy ministerial summit was held in Athens on Wednesday between Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and the United States to boost cooperation in the field of energy, security and environmental protection in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

The "3+1" energy summit was attended by Greece's Environment and Energy Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, Cyprus' Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Georgios Lakkotrypis, Israel's Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz and US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Francis Fannon.

ATHENS, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Greece's conservative government, which emerged from the July 7 general elections, won a confidence vote in parliament on Monday evening, pledging to rebuild the country in the post-bailout era.

A total of 158 MPs voted in favor of the new administration led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, while 142 voted against during the roll call vote in the 300-member strong assembly, which was broadcast live on Greek national broadcaster ERT.

ATHENS, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The Greek state mechanism has been put on alert and there was no cause for alarm, Greek officials said after an earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale shook Athens on Friday.

No serious injuries or major damages were reported and Acropolis and other treasures in museums and archaeological sites were intact, officials said, as several aftershocks measuring 3 to 4.4 have been recorded by scientists.
