U.S. forces in Iraq hit by rockets, contractor killed

ERBIL (Reuters) - A rocket attack on U.S.-led forces in northern Iraq killed a civilian contractor on Monday and injured a U.S. service member, the U.S. coalition in Iraq said, in the deadliest such attack in almost a year.

The rockets landed in and around a military air base operated by the coalition at Erbil International Airport.

The coalition spokesman tweeted on Tuesday that the dead contractor was not American, but did not elaborate. He said three 107 mm rockets had landed inside the base.

"The board is determined to recover the first and last Iraqi artifact smuggled abroad, and we will not give up a single piece of it, regardless of its size and importance," Laith Hussein, head of the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, told al-Sabah.

Abu Hassan al-Ghreibawi, the group leader in southern Iraq, and Ghanim Sabah, responsible for the movement of the Daesh operatives, were killed, al-Kadhimi, who is also commander-in-chief of the Iraqi forces, said in a tweet.

UN Envoy To Iraq Visits Tehran To Support Stability In Iraq

BAGHDAD, Feb 2 (NNN-NINA) – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), said that, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, paid a two-day visit to Tehran, that aimed at supporting Iraq’s stability.

A UNAMI statement said that, Hennis-Plasschaert, held talks on Jan 31 and Feb 1 (yesterday), with Iranian officials, over regional issues as part of efforts to support stability in Iraq.

Thousands of Iraqis protest government employment policy

01 Feb 2021; MEMO: Thousands of Iraqis gathered in front of the prime minister's office in central Baghdad yesterday to protest against the government's employment policy for 2021, Anadolu reported.

The agency said the protesters rejected the government's decision to halt employment in the public sector for 2021, and demanded it amends its policy.
