Indian PM encyclopedia of fake news: Kanhaiya Kumar

Mumbai, Dec 22 (PTI) Student leader Kanhaiya Kumar Saturday dubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the "encyclopedia" of fake news.

Speaking at an interactive session organised by the All India Professional Congress here, the former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) said the prime minister cannot "fool" people through "fake news".

"Fake prime minister cannot fool people with fake news. The PM is an encyclopedia of fake news", he said.

India: Nine bank unions call for one-day strike

Mumbai, Dec 23; GANASHAKTI: Close to 1 million employees of various banks, including private lenders, have called for a one-day strike on December 26 to protest against the proposed amalgamation of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda.

The strike call comes on the heels of an officers union of state-run banks observing a day-long strike last Friday on similar grounds along with demand for immediate settlement of their wage negotiations.

India: List of all 22 accused acquitted in Sohrabuddin case

Mumbai, Dec 21 (PTI) Here is a list of the 22 persons acquitted by a special CBI court in the alleged fake encounter killings of Sohrabuddin Shaikh, his wife Kausar Bi and his aide Tulsi Prajapati.

Narainsinh Dabhi: Was then inspector with Gujarat ATS and was accused of being part of the team which allegedly killed Shaikh.

Mukeshkumar Parmar: Was then deputy SP in Gujarat ATS and was accused of being part of the team which allegedly killed Shaikh.

India: Ex-VP of multinational company held for chain-snatching

Mumbai, Dec 19 (PTI) A 35-year-old former vice president of a multinational company was arrested for chain snatching at Vashi in Navi Mumbai, police said Wednesday.

Sumitsen Gupta, a resident of Vashi was arrested on December 12, an official said.

"He had earlier stolen a sedan car near Fortis Hospital in Vashi. He used that vehicle for chain-snatching," the official added.

India: Sexual assault survivors embark on 'Dignity March'

Mumbai, Dec 20 (PTI) Over 5,000 survivors of sexual violence across the country Thursday embarked on a 65-day-long 'Dignity March' from the city, which will culminate in New Delhi on February 22, its organisers said.

The march has been organised by Rashtriya Garima Abhiyan, a group of NGOs. It will cover 200 districts across 24 states/union territories and traverse over 10,000 kms.

Abhiyan's convener Ashif Sheikh said over 5,000 survivors of sexual assault will highlight their plight through this "unique and first of its kind" march.

Bombay HC upholds death penalty of woman techie rapist & killer

Mumbai, Dec 20 (PTI) The Bombay High Court Thursday upheld a trial court verdict awarding the death penalty to a man convicted of raping and killing a 23-year-old woman techie from Andhra Pradesh here in 2014, describing him as a "menace to the society".

The convict, 30-year-old Chandrabhan Sanap, was pronounced guilty by a special court in 2015 and awarded the death sentence.

A bench of Justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre dismissed an appeal filed by Sanap (30) challenging the trial court verdict.

India: Shiv Sena boycotts PM's events in Maha

Mumbai, Dec 18 (PTI) The BJP's warring ally Shiv Sena Tuesday chose to stay away from the inauguration of various projects by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai metropolitan region and Pune.

The prime minister Tuesday laid foundation stones for two metro lines - Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan (Metro 5) and the Dahisar-Mira Bhayander (Metro 9) at Kalyan in neighbouring Thane district. He also launched the Navi Mumbai town planning authority Cidco's (City & Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) mass-housing scheme worth Rs 18,000 crore.

India: Raj Thackeray gets bail in 2008 case

Nashik (Maha), Dec 18 (PTI) A court in Igatpuri in Nashik district of Maharashtra Tuesday granted bail to MNS chief Raj Thackeray in connection with a 2008 case of attack on a hotel by his party workers.

Thackeray appeared in Igatpuri court on Tuesday, where Judge K I Khan granted him bail.

As part of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's strident protest against north Indians in 2008, the party workers had attacked a hotel, owned by a north Indian, in Igatpuri.

Police had booked six persons, including Thackeray, in this connection.

India: 'Ram temple issue may not click for BJP in 2019 polls'

Mumbai, Dec 12 (PTI) A day after the BJP's poll debacle in three Hindi heartland states, NCP chief Sharad Pawar Wednesday said the Ram temple issue might not work in favour of the saffron party again, unlike in the past, if it is raised ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

He alleged that the BJP may try to create a communal divide on the temple issue which is a "matter of concern".
