Indian Rupee plummets 55 paise to 76.90 per USD

Mumbai, May 6 (PTI) Snapping its four-day winning run, the rupee slumped 55 paise to close at 76.90 against the US dollar on Friday as heavy foreign fund outflows and hardening crude oil prices took a toll on sentiment.

Global sentiment was risk-averse on renewed concerns over growth and inflation, which hit most emerging market currencies, forex traders said.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened lower at 76.61 against the greenback, and moved in a range of 76.56 and 76.96.

Mumbai, May 4 (PTI) Equity markets fell sharply in late afternoon trade on Wednesday, with the Sensex and Nifty diving over 2 per cent each after the RBI in a surprise move hiked the benchmark lending rate to 4.40 per cent to contain inflation.

The 30-share BSE benchmark tumbled 1,306.96 points or 2.29 per cent to settle at 55,669.03. During the day, it plummeted 1,474.39 points or 2.58 per cent to 55,501.60.

The NSE Nifty tanked 391.50 points or 2.29 per cent to finish at 16,677.60.

India: RBI raises CRR by 50 bps to 4.5 pc from May 21

Mumbai, May 4 (PTI) The Reserve Bank on Wednesday announced a hike in cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 50 basis points to 4.5 per cent, effective May 21, which will take out Rs 87,000 crore liquidity from the system.

The decision was announced by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das after an off-cycle meeting of the rate-setting panel -- Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

CRR is a percentage of a bank's total deposits that it needs to maintain as liquid cash.

The MPC also decided to raise the repo rate or the short-term lending rate by 40 basis points to 4.4 per cent.

Indian economy faces headwinds from global spillovers: RBI

Mumbai, May 4 (PTI) The RBI on Wednesday cautioned that while the Indian economy appears capable of weathering the deterioration in geopolitical conditions amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, it faces headwinds from global spillovers from geopolitical tensions, elevated commodity prices and moderating external demand.

The RBI, however, did not tinker with the GDP growth projection made in April. It had slashed the GDP growth projection for the fiscal 2022-23 to 7.2 per cent from its earlier forecast of 7.8 per cent.

India: Cop injured in encounter with Naxals in Maha

Mumbai, May 3 (PTI) A police constable suffered serious injuries in an encounter with Naxals in Maharashtra's insurgency-hit Gadchiroli district on Tuesday, a senior official said.

The skirmish took place near Dodraj forest in Bhamragad, located over 900 km from the state capital Mumbai, when a team of C-60 commandos, a specialised combat unit of the Gadchiroli police, was patrolling in the area, he said.

The ultras, who had gathered in the forest, opened fire at the police patrolling team, following which the security personnel retaliated.

India: Court denies pre-arrest bail to BJP leader Ganesh Naik

Thane, Apr 30 (PTI) The Thane district court on Saturday refused to grant pre-arrest bail to BJP MLA Ganesh Naik in a case of rape and intimidation filed by a woman with whom he was allegedly in a relationship.

District and Additional Sessions Judge N K Brahme pronounced the order.

Two First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered against Naik, a former Maharashtra minister, in Navi Mumbai for alleged rape as well as for offenses under the Arms Act earlier this month.

India: BJP conspiring to divide Hindus in Maha, says Uddhav

Mumbai, Apr 30 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday accused the BJP of conspiring to divide Hindus in the state.

Thackeray made the comments during his online address to Shiv Sena's district chiefs from Konkan region, and from western and north Maharashtra, according to the points shared by the party from his speech.

Without naming the BJP, Thackeray alleged that it was trying to paint Maharashtra as "anti-Hindu" as it allegedly did in the cases of West Bengal and Kerala - both non-BJP ruled states.

India: 89 swords seized from SUV in Maha; 4 held

Mumbai/Jalna, Apr 28 (PTI) Police have seized 89 swords and a dagger from an SUV in Maharashtra's Dhule district and arrested four people in this connection, an official said Thursday.

A police team intercepted the vehicle after chasing it on Wednesday near Songir Phata in Shirpur area while it was heading towards Dhule city, located over 300 km from Mumbai, he said.

During a search, the police found 89 swords and a dagger inside the SUV in which four persons were travelling, Dhule Superintendent of Police Pravinkumar Patil said.

India: Man uses JCB machine to steal ATM in Maha

Sangli, Apr 26 (PTI) An unidentified man allegedly stole a JCB machine and used it to dislodge and take away an ATM in Sangli district of western Maharashtra, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on the intervening night of April 22 and 23 at an ATM centre of a private sector bank in Agar village of Miraj tehsil, an official said.

A CCTV footage from the ATM centre showing the JCB machine being used to dislodge the cash machine has gone viral on social media.
