India: Lockdown extended till July 31 in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Jun 29 (PTI) Maharashtra government on Monday said the lockdown in the state is being extended till July 31.

The current lockdown was to end on June 30. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had on Sunday ruled out lifting the lockdown from that date.

An order issued by Chief Secretary Ajoy Mehta on Monday said wearing face covers or masks, maintaining social distancing, restricted gatherings, and other measures shall continue to prevail.

The state government has also advised that work from home should be followed as far as possible.

India: Ganesh idols should not be more than four feet tall: CM

Mumbai, Jun 26 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said on Friday that Ganesh mandals should not install idols with a height of more than four feet in the coming Ganesh festival.

Thackeray had earlier appealed Ganesh mandals -- groups which celebrate the festival in public -- to keep the celebrations low-key this year in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ganesh festival is set to begin from August 22.

Tall Ganesh idols are especially popular in Mumbai.

India: Businessman hangs self over financial loss

Nagpur, June 21 (PTI) A 50-year-old businessman from Nagpur in Maharashtra allegedly committed suicide by hanging at his residence on Sunday due to financial distress caused by lockdown, police said.

The deceased Upendra alias Uppi Tarachand Mahadule ran catering business and also owned a grocery shop and a godown in the city, an official said.

In a suicide note purportedly written by him, Mahadule cited financial distress as the reason behind taking the extreme step, he said.

India: Shiv Sena has not changed its ideology: Uddhav

Mumbai, Jun 19 (PTI) The Shiv Sena has not changed its ideology, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said on Friday as he addressed party leaders and office-bearers on the occasion of the 54th anniversary of its formation.

The Sena last year severed ties with erstwhile ally BJP after the two parties fell out over sharing of the chief ministerial post for two-and-half years on a rotational basis.

India: Centre must respond to China's Galwan Valley claim: Sena

Mumbai, Jun 20 (PTI) Shiv Sena deputy leader Priyanka Chaturvedi on Saturday said the Centre must respond to China's claim that the sovereignty over the Galwan Valley area in Ladakh belonged to it.

Twenty Indian Army personnel, including a colonel, were killed in the clashes with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on Monday night. It was the biggest military confrontation between India and China in over five decades.

Has India's international policy failed? Maha minister

Mumbai, Jun 18 (PTI) In the wake of the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in a violent clash with Chinese troops in Ladakh, Maharashtra NCP minister Jitendra Awhad on Thursday said no country is speaking on the Galwan Valley standoff when it is clear that China indulged in aggression.

Seeking to know whether India's international policy has failed, Awhad said the American policy also does not seem to be favouring India.

Indian Rupee settles 19 paise lower at 76.03 against US dollar

Mumbai, Jun 15 (PTI) The rupee depreciated 19 paise and closed below the 76 per dollar mark on Monday as weak domestic equities and sustained foreign fund outflows weighed on investor sentiment.

Forex traders said risk appetite has waned amid fresh cases of COVID-19 globally.

The rupee opened weak at 75.93 at the interbank forex market. It fell further and finally settled for the day at 76.03 against the US dollar, down 19 paise over its last close.

It had settled at 75.84 against the US dollar on Friday.

India: Monsoon covers entire Maharashtra

Mumbai, Jun 14 (PTI) Four days after hitting coastal Maharashtra, the southwest monsoon made a steady progress and has now covered the entire state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

The progress of the monsoon has so far been normal and on the expected lines, an IMD official said.

In the last 10 days, parts of Central and North Maharashtra and Vidarbha received incessant showers, IMD's Mumbai centre deputy director general K S Hosalikar said.

"The southwest monsoon covered the entire state on Sunday," he said.

India: Two held for hunting monkey, eating its meat in Maha

Pune, Jun 12 (PTI) Two persons were arrested by forest officials for allegedly catching a monkey and consuming its meat in Junnar tehsil of Maharashtra's Pune district, an official said on Friday.

The incident was reported near Dhalewadi in Junnar forest range, where Eknath Aswale (29) and Ganpat Hilam (40) allegedly hunted a common langur and consumed its meat, a senior forest official said.
