India: CKP Co-operative Bank's licence cancelled by RBI; depositors to get up to Rs 5 lakh

3 May 2020; MEMO:  Reserve Bank of India suspended operations of CKP Co-operative Bank and cancelled its licence saying that that the financial position of the bank is highly adverse and unsustainable.

"The affairs of the bank were and are being conducted in a manner detrimental to the public interest and interest of the depositors and that the general character of the management of the bank is prejudicial to the interest of depositors as also public interest," RBI said.

India: Woman Naxal terrorist with Rs 16 reward killed in Maha

Gadchiroli, May 2 (PTI) A woman Naxal with Rs 16 lakh reward on her head and 144 serious offences against her name was gunned down in an encounter in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district on Saturday, police said.

The encounter took place in Sinbhatti jungle in the district's Pendhra division in the afternoon, an official said.

India: 5,105 prisoners released on bail in Maharashtra

Mumbai, May 2 (PTI) The prisons department of Maharashtra has released more than 5,000 inmates from various prisons of the state till Saturday, an official said.

To prevent the spread of coronavirus infection in overcrowded jails, the prisons department is releasing those inmates who are serving sentences of less than seven years on bail, he said.

India: 5 more held in Palghar lynching case, 115 nabbed so far

Palghar, May 1 (PTI) The Maharashtra CID Crime Branch has arrested five more persons in connection with the lynching of two sadhus and their driver under Kasa police station limits in Palghar district on April 16, officials said on Friday.

The three victims, from Kandivali in Mumbai, were on their way to attend a funeral in Surat in Gujarat amid the lockdown when they were attacked and killed by a mob in Gadchinchile village in the presence of a police.

India: Reliance Industries' Q4 net drops 39 pc

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) Reliance Industries on Thursday reported a 38.7 per cent drop in fourth quarter net profit at Rs 6,348 crore on weak energy and petrochemical business.

The company had posted a net profit of Rs 10,362 crore in January-March 2019.

Reliance announced a rights issue of Rs 53,125 crore, which it said was the biggest in India. The ratio would be 1:15 at a price of Rs 1,257.

India: Rishi Kapoor dies after two-year battle with cancer

Mumbai, Apr 30 (PTI) Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, who personified the Bollywood romantic hero for three decades before becoming a sought after character artiste, died here on Thursday after a two-year battle with leukaemia. He was 67.

Rishi, the third generation of the Kapoor dynasty that defined stardom, is survived by his wife Neetu, actor son Ranbir and daughter Ridhima.

"He is no more. He has passed away," his elder brother Randhir told PTI.

India: Sadhus Lynching, three more Palghar cops suspended

Palghar (Maha), Apr 29 (PTI) Three more personnel of Kasa police station in Palghar district of Maharashtra were suspended on Wednesday in connection with the April 16 lynching of two sadhus and their driver by a mob, an official said.

Palghar district superintendent of police Gaurav Singh has suspended an assistant sub-inspector and two constables after conducting a departmental inquiry against them, he said.

India: Actor Irrfan Khan dies in Mumbai hospital

Mumbai, Apr 29 (PTI) Irrfan Khan, one of India's finest and most versatile actors, lost his battle with a rare form of cancer and died in a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday, a statement from his family said. He was 54.

Irrfan, who was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour in 2018, is survived by his wife Sutapa and his sons Babil and Ayaan.

India: Maha to send 100 buses to bring back students stuck in Kota

Mumbai, Apr 28 (PTI) The Maharashtra government has decided to send about 100 buses to Kota in Rajasthan to bring back nearly 2,000 students stranded there due to the lockdown, Maharashtra Transport Minister Anil Parab has said.

Buses of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will be sent to Kota in the next two days, Parab said late Monday night.

India: 2 held in Arnab Goswami attack case get bail

Mumbai, Apr 27 (PTI) Two persons accused of attacking journalist Arnab Goswami's car while he was on his way home last week were granted bail by a court in Mumbai on Monday.

The two motorcycle-borne men allegedly tried to break the glass window of the car in the early hours of Thursday on on Ganpatrao Kadam Marg, when Goswami was returning from a studio located in Bombay Dyeing Complex in Lower Parel area, NM Joshi Marg police had said.

Metropolitan Magistrate SV Pimpale of Bhoiwada court in Dadar granted the two bail on a surety of Rs 15,000.
