House report: Trump misused power, obstructed Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump seriously misused the power of his office for personal political gain by seeking foreign intervention in the American election process and obstructed Congress by stonewalling efforts to investigate, a House report released Tuesday concluded in findings that form the basis for possible impeachment.

US re-imposes steel, aluminum tariffs on Brazil, Argentina

3 December 2019; AFP: US President Donald Trump on Monday announced plans to reimpose tariffs on steel and aluminum from Brazil and Argentina, hitting back at what he called their "unfair" policies.

The move appeared to surprise his Brazilian counterpart, Jair Bolsonaro, who considers himself an ideological ally of the Republican leader. Industry leaders in both countries cried foul.

NASA finds Indian Moon lander with help of amateur space enthusiast

3 December 2019; AFP: India's Vikram lunar lander, which crashed on its final approach to the Moon's surface in September, has been found thanks in part to the sleuthing efforts of an amateur space enthusiast.

NASA made the announcement on Monday, releasing an image taken by its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) that showed the site of the spacecraft's impact (September 7 in India and September 6 in the US).

Canada to host World Circular Economy Forum 2020

OTTAWA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Canada will host the World Circular Economy Forum 2020, co-organized by the government of Canada and the Finnish innovation fund Sitra, according to Canadian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change on Monday.

The forum will be held in Toronto from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, 2020, marking the very first time the global forum is held in North America.

Trump's campaign bans Bloomberg reporters from rallies, events

WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump's re-election campaign announced on Monday that it would ban reporters with Bloomberg News from attending its rallies and other campaign events.

The decision was in response to the media organization's recent announcement that it would not investigate its boss, Michael Bloomberg, or his rivals seeking the Democratic Party's nomination to take on Trump in 2020.

U.S. Senate confirms Trump's pick for energy secretary

WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Senate on Monday voted to confirm Dan Brouillette as President Donald Trump's next energy secretary.

The 70-to-15 vote put Brouillette, the Trump administration's deputy energy secretary, in charge of the agency that manages the nation's nuclear infrastructure and administers its energy policy.

Trump announced nominating Brouillette, 57, for the post in October after current Energy Secretary Rick Perry told him that he is leaving at the end of the year.

Trump administration quietly releases Lebanon military aid

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has quietly released more than $100 million in military assistance to Lebanon after months of unexplained delay that led some lawmakers to compare it to the aid for Ukraine at the center of the impeachment inquiry.

The $105 million in Foreign Military Financing funds for the Lebanese Armed Forces was released just before the Thanksgiving holiday and lawmakers were notified of the step on Monday, according to two congressional staffers and an administration official.

WASHINGTON (AP) — As world leaders gather in Spain to discuss how to slow the warming of the planet, a spotlight falls on China — the top emitter of greenhouse gases.

China burns about half the coal used globally each year. Between 2000 and 2018, its annual carbon emissions nearly tripled, and it now accounts for about 30% of the world’s total. Yet it’s also the leading market for solar panels, wind turbines and electric vehicles, and it manufactures about two-thirds of solar cells installed worldwide.
