Pakistan PM to meet IMF chief in Dubai for bailout package

Islamabad, Feb 10 (PTI) Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will meet IMF chief Christine Lagarde in Dubai on Sunday to discuss the conditions of the bailout package for his cash-strapped country.

Khan is paying a day-long trip to the UAE to take part in the 7th edition of the World Government Summit on the invitation of Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum.

Multi-national maritime exercise kicks off in southern Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- A five-day naval exercise kicked off in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi on Friday with an aim to bridge gaps and operate together in pursuance of shared objectives, local media reported.

Senior navy officials, ambassadors and delegates of various countries attended the inauguration ceremony of the AMAN-19 maritime exercise in which 45 countries are taking part with ships and observers, Radio Pakistan said.

No cut in defence budget: Pakistan

Islamabad, Feb 8 (PTI) Underlining that Pakistan government and the Army are enjoying a period of "unprecedented coordination", a senior minister has ruled out any cut in the country's defence budget and said it could instead increase for the national security.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry in a press conference after a Cabinet meeting on Thursday said the country's defence budget is already low as compared to other countries in the region, and therefore it should be increased.

Former Pakistan PM Gilani stopped from leaving country

Lahore, Feb 6 (PTI) Former Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was stopped from leaving the country by security officials at the Lahore airport late Tuesday night.

According to the Federal Investigation Agency, Gilani had reached the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore to catch his flight for South Korea via Bangkok to attend a conference. However, his name was on the no-fly list.

Hindu temple vandalised in Pakistan, PM Khan orders swift action

Islamabad/Karachi, Feb 6 (PTI) A Hindu temple was vandalised in Pakistan's Sindh province by miscreants who set the holy books and idols on fire, drawing a strong reaction from Prime Minister Imran Khan who ordered swift and decisive action against the perpetrators.

The incident happened last week in Kumb, a town in Khairpur district. The unidentified assailants fled the after vandalism.

Pakistan’s ex-PM Sharif moved from prison cell to hospital

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — An aide to Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif says has he been shifted from his prison cell to a government hospital in the eastern city of Lahore.

Senator Asif Kirmani says Sharif was taken from his cell in Kot Lakhpat prison on Saturday to the Services Hospital following the recommendation of a government-appointed team of doctors.

Kirmani says Sharif was diagnosed with heart-related issues which could be life threatening.

5.8-magnitude earthquake hits parts of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake of 5.8 magnitude jolted parts of Pakistan including the capital city of Islamabad on Saturday evening, the country's National Seismic Monitoring Center said.

According to the center, the earthquake struck at 5:04 p.m. local time, with the epicenter determined in Hindu Kush Region in Afghanistan with a focal depth of 80 km.

China to provide USD 2.5 bn loan to Pak to boost foreign cash reserves

Islamabad, Feb 2 (PTI) China will provide USD 2.5 billion in loans to Pakistan to boost the foreign exchange reserves of its "all-weather ally", a media report said Saturday.

Pakistan is nearly broke with the drying up of foreign cash reserves and mounting external debt.

The country's USD 8.12 billion reserves, which are below the minimum level that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) prescribe, are sufficient to cover only seven weeks of imports.

Pakistan: New medical team formed for jailed ex-premier

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan; 27 Jan 2019; AA: A new high-level medical board has been constituted to examine the health condition of jailed former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, local media reported on Saturday.

The third medical board was constituted after doctors said Sharif has uncontrolled blood pressure, stage 3 chronic kidney disease, borderline raised troponin T level with significant history of ischemic heart disease, reported Dawn, a local daily.
