Sudan’s military warns of conflict after rival force deploys

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudan’s military warned Thursday of potential clashes with the country’s powerful paramilitary force, which it said deployed troops in the capital and other cities.

Tensions between the military and the Rapid Support Forces have escalated in recent months, forcing a delay in the signing of an internationally backed deal with political parties to revive the country’s democratic transition.

UN voices concern over tense situation in Sudan

In a statement, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on Sudan's rivals to work to overcome obstacles to civilian transition.

Sudan produced 41.8 tonnes of gold in 2022

04 Apr 2023; MEMO: Some 41.8 tonnes of gold were mined in Sudan last year, worth 150.9 billion Sudanese pounds ($2.5 billion)., the government said yesterday.

The data came in a statement issued by the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company affiliated with the Ministry of Minerals. It said that "last year's production recorded 41.8 tonnes." No figures were released for 2021.

Sudan: 14 miners dead dozens injured in mine collapse

31 Mar 2023; MEMO: Fourteen miners have died and more than 20 have been injured in a mine collapse in Sudan's Northern state, a senior official in state-owned Sudanese Mineral Resources Company told Reuters on Friday.

Part of a mountainside collapsed near Al Jabal Al Ahmar mine, located 70 kilometres away from Wadi Halfa city, causing the deadly accident on Thursday, Moataz Hajj Nour told Reuters.

Sudan state media says 10 workers dead in gold mine collapse

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — At least 10 workers are dead after a gold mine collapsed in northern Sudan, state media has reported.

Sudan’s SUNA news said the workers died after the roof of the Jebel Al-Ahmar gold mine, near the Egyptian border, collapsed Thursday. Many other miners are still missing, it reported.

Several of the bodies, mostly of young men, have been recovered from the site and search efforts are ongoing, SUNA said. A security source cited by the state agency said workers are feared to be trapped beneath the mine’s groundwater. Few further details were given.

UN says nearly 4 mln children, women in Sudan malnourished

KHARTOUM, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations on Sunday said that nearly 4 million children and women in Sudan are suffering from acute malnutrition.

"About 4 million children under five and pregnant and lactating women are estimated to be acutely malnourished and need humanitarian lifesaving nutrition services in 2023, of these 611,000 are facing severe acute malnutrition," the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan (OCHA) said in a press release.

09 Feb 2023; MEMO: An agreement to establish a naval base by Russia on the Sudanese Red Sea Coast is moving forward, Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov,​​ said Thursday, Anadolu News Agency reports.

"You know this agreement has been signed earlier between the two countries and it's only waiting to be legislated," he said at a news conference in Khartoum after meeting Sudanese military chief, Abdul Fattah Alburhan.
