US withdrawal from Open Skies Treaty comes into force on Sunday

WASHINGTON, November 22. /TASS/: The United States ceased being a party to the Open Skies Treaty (OST) on Sunday.

On May 21, US President Donald Trump declared that Washington was going to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty, which provides for inspection flights over member countries’ territories to monitor military activities. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo explained in a written statement that the decision on Washington’s withdrawal from the agreement would enter into force in six months, starting from May 22, i.e. on November 22.

HOUSTON, Nov 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Texas Army National Guard is sending a 36-person team, to assist with mortuary services starting yesterday, in the border county of El Paso, that was hit hard lately by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Twitter, Facebook to hand over @POTUS account to Biden on January 20

(Reuters) - Twitter Inc and Facebook Inc will transfer control of the @POTUS account to the Joe Biden administration on Jan. 20, the social media companies said on Saturday.

The @POTUS account on both platforms is the official account of the President of the United States. It is separate from the @realDonaldTrump Twitter account and the @DonaldTrump Facebook page that U.S. President Donald Trump mostly uses to write his posts.

U.S. judge calls Trump claim challenging Biden win in Pennsylvania 'Frankenstein's Monster'

(Reuters) - A federal judge on Saturday dismissed a lawsuit critical to President Donald Trump’s long-shot bid to overturn his Nov. 3 election loss to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden, calling his legal claim a “Frankenstein’s Monster.”

The Trump campaign had sought to prevent state officials from certifying the results of the election in the state.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, described the case as “strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations.”

U.S. sets new record-high COVID-19 daily count as total cases surpass 12 mln

WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The United States reported new record-high COVID-19 daily case count at nearly 200,000 on Friday, as the total number of confirmed cases surpassed 12 million on Saturday.

The country has recorded more than 12,059,686 cases with more than 255,800 related deaths as of Saturday evening, according to the real-time count kept by Johns Hopkins University. It took only six days for the country to add over 1 million infections to a record high of 11 million cases on Nov. 15.

US-European ocean monitoring satellite launches into orbit

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) — A U.S.-European satellite designed to extend a decades-long measurement of global sea surface heights was launched into Earth orbit from California on Saturday.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the satellite blasted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 9:17 a.m. and arced southward over the Pacific Ocean. The Falcon’s first stage flew back to the launch site and landed for reuse.

Trump team requests recount of Georgia’s presidential race

(AP) --- President Donald Trump’s campaign requested a recount of votes in the Georgia presidential race on Saturday, a day after state officials certified results showing Democrat Joe Biden won the state, as his legal team presses forward with attacks alleging widespread fraud without proof.

Georgia’s results showed Biden beating Trump by 12,670 votes out of about 5 million cast, or 0.25%. State law allows a candidate to request a recount if the margin is less than 0.5%. Republican Gov. Brian Kemp formalized the state’s slate of 16 presidential electors.
