Fulfilling the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg before the fall election is as much about McConnell’s goal of securing a conservative majority on the court for decades to come as it is about confirming President Donald Trump’s upcoming nominee.

USA: Homes burned as winds push California fire into desert floor

JUNIPER HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Strong afternoon winds intensified a wildfire burning for nearly two weeks in mountains northeast of Los Angeles, prompting authorities to issue new evacuation orders Saturday for desert communities that lost some homes a day earlier.

Meanwhile, officials were investigating the death of a firefighter on the lines of another Southern California wildfire that erupted earlier this month from a smoke-generating pyrotechnic device used by a couple to reveal their baby’s gender.

USA: GOP senators confront past comments on Supreme Court vote

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican senators weighing what to do about the vacancy on the Supreme Court are facing questions about their own past comments amid complaints by Democrats that their views have shifted with changing political reality.

President Donald Trump on Saturday urged the GOP-run Senate to consider “without delay” his upcoming nomination to fill the seat vacated by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Friday. The move comes just six weeks before the election.

Turkey's US envoy lambasts Washington Post columnist

19 Sep 2020; AA: Turkey's Ambassador to Washington Serdar Kilic on Friday disputed a Washington Post op-ed that accused the Trump administration of "enabling" Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. 

Writing in the same paper two weeks after columnist David Ignatius, Kilic said the piece contained "groundless and irrational allegations and ignored Turkey’s contributions to the fight against terrorism, to the NATO alliance and to regional security."

Trump claims Russia created hypersonic missile after receiving info about it from US

WASHINGTON, September 19. /TASS/: US President Donald Trump claimed on Friday that Russia created its hypersonic missile after receiving information about such technologies from the administration of his predecessor Barack Obama.

"They [Russia] have the missile, the super-duper-hypersonic missile <…> It goes five times faster than a normal missile," he told the crowd in Bemidji, Minnesota. "We have one that goes much faster, much faster than that."

TikTok files complaint against Trump administration to try to block U.S. ban

(Reuters) - Popular video-sharing app TikTok has asked a U.S. judge to block the Trump administration from enforcing a ban on the Chinese social media network, according to court documents filed late on Friday.

TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance Ltd., filed a complaint in a Washington federal court challenging the recent prohibitory moves by the Trump administration.

The U.S. Commerce Department announced a ban on Friday blocking people in the United States from downloading Chinese-owned messaging app WeChat and TikTok starting Sept. 20.

UN chief calls for political will for Sustainable Development Goals

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday called for political will and bold action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Public appetite for transformative change is growing, he said in his opening remarks at the SDG Moment 2020. "But one critical ingredient is still missing: political will. Without it, neither public appetite nor stakeholder action will be sufficient."
