The Republican-controlled Senate voted 55-45 to pass the war powers resolution, which demands the U.S. president terminate the use of U.S. troops for hostilities against Iran without congressional approval.

Eight Republican senators joined the Democrats to support the resolution despite opposition from President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Defense Department confirmed on Thursday that one U.S. soldier had died in a non-combat incident in Afghanistan.

The soldier, who was supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel, died on Wednesday at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related incident, said the Pentagon in a statement.

The incident is under investigation, the statement added.
