China, India leading global greening effort: NASA study

Washington, Feb 12 (PTI) India and China are leading the global greening effort, which is quite contrary to the general perception worldwide, a latest NASA study said Monday, observing that the world is a greener place than it was 20 years ago.

The NASA study based on data received and analysed from its satellite said that India and China are leading in greening on land. "China and India account for one-third of the greening but contain only 9 per cent of the planet's land area covered in vegetation," said lead author Chi Chen of Boston University.

China, Russia pose challenge to US space capabilities: Pentagon

Washington, Feb 12 (PTI) China and Russia have developed robust and capable space services and the two countries pose a challenge and threat to the space capabilities of the US, the Pentagon has said.

Chinese and Russian military doctrines indicate they view space as important to modern warfare and counterspace capabilities as a means to reduce US and allied military effectiveness, the Pentagon said in a report released by the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Pittsburgh synagogue terrorist due in federal court

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A truck driver accused of killing 11 people and wounding seven during an attack on a Pittsburgh synagogue in October is expected to appear Monday morning in a federal courtroom to be arraigned on additional charges.

The hearing in Robert Bowers’ case is expected to be short and involves giving him formal notice of the criminal charges issued in a new indictment.

Denver teachers prepare to strike over pay dispute

DENVER (AP) — Teachers in Colorado’s capital are planning to strike Monday for the first time in 25 years after failed negotiations with the school district over base pay.

The teachers union and Denver Public Schools met Saturday in an attempt to reach a new contract after more than a year of negotiations, but both sides left disappointed.

The Denver Classroom Teachers Association released a statement after the meeting saying the district’s proposal lacks transparency and “pushes for failed incentives for some over meaningful base salary for all.”

WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Senator Amy Klobuchar, a moderate Democrat, on Sunday announced her candidacy for President of the United States.

The senator for state of Minnesota, who easily won a third term last year, made the announcement during a speech in Minneapolis in a frigid and snowy day.

Klobuchar, 58, becomes the fifth U.S. senator and the fourth female member in the chamber announcing a bid for the presidency.

US and Russia push rival UN resolutions on Venezuela
