Trump meets Chinese vice premier at White House

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday met with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He at the White House, saying major progress was made in the latest round of U.S.-China trade talks.

Liu, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chief of the Chinese side of the China-U.S. comprehensive economic dialogue, led the Chinese delegation for the two-day trade talks that concluded on Thursday in Washington.

Catholic leaders in Texas name 286 accused of abusing minors

Dallas, Feb 1 (AP) Catholic leaders in Texas on Thursday identified 286 priests and others accused of sexually abusing children, a number that represents one of the largest collections of names to be released since an explosive grand jury report last year in Pennsylvania.

Fourteen dioceses in Texas named those credibly accused of abuse.

The only diocese not to provide names, Fort Worth, did so more than a decade ago and then provided an updated accounting in October.

Rand Paul awarded more than $580K after neighbor’s attack

Texas inmate executed for Houston officer’s death

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A 61-year-old Texas inmate was executed Wednesday evening for killing a Houston police officer more than three decades ago.

Robert Jennings received lethal injection for the July 1988 fatal shooting of Officer Elston Howard during a robbery at an adult bookstore that authorities said was part of a crime spree.

Democrats gain in statehouses as some GOP lawmakers defect

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Democrats’ gains in state legislatures didn’t end with last November’s elections.

Over the past two months, as lawmakers were sworn in and this year’s statehouse sessions got underway, Republicans in California, Kansas and New Jersey switched their party affiliations to become Democrats.

They cited various reasons, but the party-switchers have one thing in common: They say the GOP under President Donald Trump has become too extreme.

US moves ahead with oil leases near sacred park

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — U.S. land managers will move forward in March with the sale of oil and gas leases that include land near Chaco Culture National Historical Park and other sites sacred to Native American tribes.

The sale comes as Democratic members of Congress, tribal leaders and environmentalists have criticized the federal Bureau of Land Management for pushing ahead with drilling permit reviews and preparations for energy leases despite the recent government shutdown.

Trump rebukes intelligence officials over foreign policy contradiction

"The Intelligence people seem to be extremely passive and naive when it comes to the dangers of Iran. They are wrong!" said Trump in a Wednesday tweet.
