Washington, Nov 30 (PTI) The United States said on Friday that it welcomes efforts by India and Pakistan to increase people-to-people contact, days after the two neighbouring countries laid foundation stones for a corridor linking two revered gurdwaras on both sides of the border.

Guterres says UN will firmly support Palestinian people

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pledged on Wednesday that the UN will firmly support the Palestinian people.

"The United Nations will not waver in its commitment to the Palestinian people," the UN chief said in his remarks observing the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which falls on Nov. 29 each year.

U.S. business groups urge White House to resolve trade dispute with China

WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 150 U.S. business groups on Tuesday urged the White House to resolve the ongoing trade dispute with China during an expected meeting between the two countries' leaders at the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Argentina later this week.

In a letter addressed to U.S. President Donald Trump, the Americans for Free Trade, a lobbying coalition representing these business groups, said it urged Trump to capitalize on the upcoming meeting to reach an agreement with the Chinese side on the trade front.

NASA's InSight sends signals to Earth after landing on Mars, deploys solar arrays

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- NASA's InSight spacecraft has sent signals to Earth after its successful landing on Mars, indicating that its solar panels are open and collecting sunlight on the Martian surface.

NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter relayed the signals as well as images showing InSight's landing site, according to a release of NASA on Tuesday.

The solar array deployment ensures the spacecraft can recharge its batteries each day.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told senators Wednesday that America’s national security interests are at stake as they consider a vote to halt U.S. involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen.

In prepared remarks released ahead of a closed-door Senate briefing, Pompeo said diplomatic efforts to end the conflict were underway.

“The suffering in Yemen grieves me, but if the United States of America was not involved in Yemen, it would be a hell of a lot worse,” Pompeo said.

Rise in US deaths in Afghanistan clouds outlook for peace

WASHINGTON (AP) — A rash of American combat deaths in Afghanistan is putting a spotlight on a stalemated 17-year war that is testing President Donald Trump’s commitment to pursuing peace with the Taliban.

Trump has acknowledged that his original instinct was to withdraw from Afghanistan, but last week he suggested he is willing to stick it out, asserting that the U.S. is in “very strong negotiations” — an apparent reference to U.S. envoy Zalmay Khalilzad’s efforts to get the Taliban to agree to peace talks.
