Kenya: As Tigray calms, Ethiopia sees growing conflict in Oromia

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — As one deadly conflict in Ethiopia begins to calm, another is growing, challenging a government that’s eager to persuade the international community to lift sanctions and revive what was once one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies.

Even as Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed attends the U.S.-Africa summit this week to promote last month’s peace agreement between his government and authorities from the country’s Tigray region, the larger region of Oromia appears increasingly unstable.

Zimbabwe's first locally trained acupuncturists graduate

HARARE, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A group of 10 medical workers graduated from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and acupuncture personnel training course here on Monday, becoming Zimbabwe's first medical workers to complete such training.

The training program of over four months, held at the TCM and Acupuncture Center at the Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare, comprised of theory and practice, and included basic operation of acupuncture and moxibustion as well as diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

At least 131 civilians killed in DR Congo by M23 rebels: UN

KINSHASA, Dec 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) — M23 rebels killed at least 131 civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Nov 29-30 according to preliminary findings, the UN mission in the country said in a statement.

Authorities in Kinshasa had said that some 300 people, almost all civilians, had died in M23 attacks in the village of Kishishe in the eastern North Kivu province. The group had denied being behind the massacre, blaming “stray bullets” for the deaths of just eight civilians.

Tanzania: French government commits to support EAC-led process in DRC

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 7 (NNN-KBC) — The French Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania, Nabil Hahjlaoui, pledged his country’s commitment to support EAC-Led Nairobi Process, on restoration of peace and security in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). 

Hahjlaoui made the disclosure when he met with the Secretary General of the EAC, Dr. Peter Mathuki, who paid a courtesy call on him at his residence in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. 

Hahjlaoui reiterated his country’s commitment to use its experience and help in any way necessary to bring peace back in Eastern DRC.  

China-aided ECOWAS headquarters begins construction

ABUJA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The China-aided construction of the permanent headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) began on Sunday in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, to consolidate the regional bloc's operations in one complex -- a departure from operating at three different locations in Abuja.

Nigeria confirms resumption of passenger train service suspended following attack

ABUJA, Dec 3 (NNN-Xinhua) — The Nigerian government has announced that passenger train service between the capital city Abuja and the northern city Kaduna would resume early next week, about eight months after it was suspended after an attack on a train along the route at the end of March.

Fidet Okhiria, managing director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, told a press conference that passengers wishing to utilize the service will be able to purchase their tickets within a few days.

FAO and Germany step up humanitarian action in rural Somalia

MOGADISHU, Dec 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Government of Germany and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have together increased humanitarian assistance through cash transfers to mitigate the impact of drought on the food security and livelihoods of affected rural communities in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Hunger is increasing and intensifying in Mogadishu with about 6.7 million people, including over 300,000 of those already facing famine conditions, expected to be acutely food insecure until end of the year.

Kenya: 1,094 cholera cases reported countrywide

NAIROBI, Dec 1 (NNN-KBC) — 10 counties have reported cholera-related cases in recent days with Nairobi, Garissa and Machakos recording highest number of cases. 

This was disclosed by Acting Health Services Director General Dr. Patrick Amoth during the launch of Kenya’s Status Report on infection prevention and control in health care facilities launch, in Machakos County.

Dr. Amoth revealed that all the 17 sub-counties of Nairobi had reported cases of cholera outbreak with a total of 1,094 cases reported nationally and 25 fatalities.
