Building collapses in Kenya’s capital, killing three people

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — At least three people died when a building collapsed in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, authorities said Wednesday.

Six other people were rescued from the rubble and are being treated at a hospital in the Kasarani suburb, where the multi-story building is located.

The residential building was under construction and had shown signs of weakness including visible cracks before it collapsed, witnesses told local media.

Ethiopia asserts 70% of Tigray now under military control

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Ethiopia’s lead negotiator in ongoing peace talks asserted Friday that 70% of the country’s northern Tigray region is now under military control and aid deliveries have resumed to the area, but there is no immediate confirmation from aid workers or Tigray spokesmen.

National Security Adviser Redwan Hussein tweeted the information as the talks continued in neighboring Kenya, and as the United States applied pressure on Ethiopia’s government to swiftly deliver aid and basic services.

Use of term 'Al-Shabab' banned in Somalia - use "Khawarij" instead

07 Nov 2022; MEMO: The Somali government, on Monday, banned the use of the name "Al-Shabaab," referring to the Al Qaeda-linked terror group that the majority-Muslim nation said is a deviant sect.

In a statement, Somalia's Ministry of Religious Affairs also barred scholars from having dealings with the armed terror group, which it said should rather be referred to as "Khawarij," a term describing a deviant sect.

S. African health official urges people to be vigilant against malaria

JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- A health official from South Africa's Gauteng Province on Sunday called on those who have recently travelled to and from malaria endemic areas to seek medical treatment when they have symptoms.

Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko, a member of the executive council for health and wellness in Gauteng Province, made the remarks on Sunday while observing the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Malaria Day. Nov. 6 is Malaria Day in the SADC region to create awareness about malaria prevention, symptoms, and treatment.

Tanzania: Small passenger plane crashes into Lake Victoria

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A small passenger plane crashed Sunday morning into Lake Victoria on approach to an airport in Tanzania, and regional authorities said at least three people died.

Local authorities said 26 of the 43 people on board the Precision Air flight from the coastal city of Dar es Salaam were rescued and taken to a hospital. The plane was headed to Bukoba Airport.

Precision Air is a Tanzanian airline company.

News reports showed photos of the plane mostly submerged in the lake.

Tanzania says Mount Kilimanjaro fire largely contained

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The fire burning on Mount Kilimanjaro for almost two weeks has been largely contained after hundreds of military personnel were deployed to help, Tanzania’s prime minister said Thursday.

The blaze destroyed 33 square kilometers (nearly 13 square miles) on Africa’s tallest and most famous mountain, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said.

The fire started on Oct. 21 near the Karanga camp, which is popular among the thousands of hikers who attempt the climb of the mountain every year.

Ethiopia government, Tigray rebels sign cease-fire deal, ending 2-year war

World Bank Group urges Ghana to turn climate challenge into growth opportunity

ACCRA, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- The World Bank Group has urged Ghana to turn its climate challenge into an opportunity for resilient and sustainable growth.

The World Bank made this call Tuesday in its new Country Climate and Development Report for Ghana, warning the income could reduce by up to 40 percent for poor households by 2050 and at least one million more people could fall into poverty if urgent climate actions are not taken in the West African country.

Nigeria calls US ‘irresponsible’ for terror warnings

ABUJA, Nov 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A top adviser to Nigeria’s government has described as “irresponsible” and “unnecessary” the recent warnings by several Western countries of possible terror attacks in the capital Abuja and elsewhere in the country.

Speaking after a meeting of Nigeria’s intelligence and military chiefs chaired by the president, National Security Adviser Babagana Monguno told journalists that “any exaggerated sense of insecurity” was unfounded and that the situation in Abuja was “under control”.
