PORT LOUIS, May 30 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The prime minister of Mauritius has announced the lifting of the strict coronavirus lockdown from Sunday.

Since March 20 the Indian Ocean island nation, a popular tourist destination, has only allowed people to leave their homes if they have a work permit.

Residents have also only been allowed out to supermarkets on certain days – dependent on first letter of their surname.

But Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth said supermarkets and shops would be allowed to operate normally from May 31.

Ahmedabad, May 28 (PTI) A BJP MLA in Gujarat tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday and was admitted to a private hospital.

His condition was stable, said state BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya.

Congress MLA Imran Khedawala took a jibe at the MLA for not opting for government-run hospitals.

Did the BJP legislator not trust the state government's claim that government hospitals were providing the best treatment, he asked.

New Delhi, May 29 (PTI) India's coronavirus death toll has surpassed that of China after it reported a total of 4,706 fatalities, while it overtook Turkey to become the ninth worst-hit nation by the pandemic with 1,65,799 COVID-19 cases.

The country has registered 175 deaths and a record 7,466 fresh coronavirus infection cases in the last 24 hrs till Friday 8 am, according to the Union Health Ministry.

New Delhi, May 29 (PTI) Delhi's COVID-19 death tally has jumped by 82 in the last 24 hours, due to inclusion of 69 deaths that were reported late, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Friday.

He said 13 deaths occurred on Friday while the remaining 69 took place in the last 34 days and were reported late.

The total deaths due to COVID-19 in Delhi has mounted to 398 so far, Health Minister Satyendra Jain said.

BLANTYRE (Malawi), May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — About 400 people have escaped from a coronavirus quarantine centre in Malawi’s second-largest city, Blantyre, after complaining about its poor state.

Local media has reported that the escapees were quarantined on arrival from South Africa and were yet to be tested for Coronavirus.

They had complained that the stadium, which was turned into a quarantine centre, lacked water, toilets and food.

The government has not commented on the escape.

UNITED NATIONS, May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — World leaders called for resilience and cooperation after the pandemic recedes, during a UN video conference in which the United States, China and Russia did not participate.

About 50 leaders took part in the event on development financing, with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte saying in a recorded message that the goal must be to “leave no one behind.”

BRASILIA, May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Brazil registered a new record in COVID-19 cases and more than 1,000 dead in a 24 hour period, according to official figures.

The South American country has the world’s second highest number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases — 438,238 — after the United States.

According to Health Ministry data, 26,417 new cases were confirmed in a 24 hour-period ending late Thursday.

PARIS, May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Several European countries including France and Britain on Thursday moved to further lift crippling coronavirus lockdown measures, but fresh restrictions in parts of Asia signalled the crisis is far from over.

As much of the world grapples to find the path forward, with the deadly virus still spreading in some places and a vaccine at best a distant reality, Europe is slowly emerging from isolation.

SEOUL, May 29 (NNN-YONHAP) — South Korea’s government will carry out across-the-board inspections of logistics centers and toughen guidelines on limiting the number of students taking in-person classes at schools in the Seoul metropolitan area, officials said Friday, amid growing alarm over the new coronavirus in the greater Seoul area.

In a precautionary move to stem community transmission, the education ministry said it plans to limit the number of students at schools in the capital area.
