India: Election petition filed in Gujarat HC on rejection of Cong's Surat LS candidate's nomination form

AHMEDABAD: A petition challenging the validity and legality of the returning officer's decision to reject the nomination of the Congress' Surat Lok Sabha candidate Nilesh Kumbhani was filed in the Gujarat High Court on Monday.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mukesh Dalal was declared winner unopposed after Kumbhani's nomination was rejected and other candidates withdrew from the race.

Pakistani high court orders de-sealing of Imran Khan's party office in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: A top court here on Tuesday ordered authorities to de-seal the central office of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, nearly two weeks after it was shut down.

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) on May 24 raided the PTI office in Islamabad and closed the building, alleging that it was built by violating laws.

The party had challenged the action in the Islamabad High Court where Justice Saman Rizvi on Monday reserved judgement after concluding the hearing.

Pakistan: Sino-Pak relations 'unshakable', says PM Sharif as he embarks on China visit

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday emphasised that Pakistan's all-weather relationship with China was "unshakable" as he embarked on a five-day official visit to Beijing to further bolster bilateral ties and to launch the second phase of the multi-billion dollar CPEC projects in his country.

Sharif will be in China from June 4 to 8 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

India: Sharjeel Imam granted bail by HC in sedition case

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday granted bail to student activist Sharjeel Imam in connection with a 2020 communal riots case involving allegations of sedition and unlawful activities.

Imam assailed a trial court order refusing to grant him bail even though he has undergone more than half of the maximum sentence that can be awarded to him in case of a conviction.

"Appeal is allowed," a bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain said after hearing the counsel for Imam and the Delhi Police.

India: Kejriwal aide Bibhav Kumar moves HC against arrest in Swati Maliwal assault case

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's close aide Bibhav Kumar on Wednesday moved the Delhi High Court challenging his arrest in connection with the alleged assault on AAP MP Swati Maliwal at the CM's residence earlier this month.

In his petition, Kumar sought a direction to declare his arrest as illegal and in gross violation of the provisions of Section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure and against the mandate of the law.

Pakistan: No verdict on appeals against conviction of Imran Khan and his wife in illegal marriage case as judge recuses himself

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistan court on Wednesday did not announce its verdict on the appeals against the conviction of jailed former premier Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the illegal marriage case after the judge recused himself.

Khan, 71, and Bibi, 49, were sentenced to seven years in prison each on February 3 by a trial court for contracting the marriage during iddat, a mandatory period for a woman in Islam to wait before a second marriage after the death of her husband or divorce.

India: Delhi records its highest ever temperature, Mungeshpur bakes at 52.3 deg C

NEW DELHI: Delhi's Mungeshpur area Wednesday logged a maximum of 52.3 degrees Celsius, the highest ever temperature recorded in the city, officials said.

On Tuesday, the weather station in the northwest Delhi locality recorded 49.9 degrees Celsius.

A day later, the temperature rose further with the weather station recording a maximum temperature of 52.3 degrees Celsius at 4.14 pm, according to the website.

Bangladesh declares May 23 as mourning day for Iran president Raisi's martyrdom

Tehran, IRNA – Bangladesh has announced Thursday (May 23) as a day of mourning for martyrdom of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Bangladesh did so after the same measure was taken by a number of other countries, including Pakistan and India, to announce days of mourning for the deaths of President Raisi and his entourage, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, IRNA cited Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.

India: Delhi court dismisses BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh's plea into sexual harassment case

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Friday dismissed an application filed by former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh seeking further investigation into a sexual harassment case lodged by six female wrestlers against him.

While dismissing the application, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Priyanka Rajpoot fixed May 7 for an order on whether to frame charges against Singh in the case.

Indian SC rejects pleas on 100 pc cross verification of votes cast using EVMs

NEW DELHI: As the country voted in round two of Election 2024, the Supreme Court on Friday rejected pleas seeking complete cross-verification of votes cast using EVMs with a Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) and said "blindly distrusting" any aspect of the system can breed unwarranted scepticism.
