India: EPCA declares public health emergency in Delhi-NCR

New Delhi, Nov 1 (PTI) A Supreme Court mandated panel on Friday declared a public health emergency in the Delhi-NCR region and banned construction activity till November 5.

As pollution level in the region entered the "severe plus" category, the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority also banned the bursting of crackers during the winter season.

Germany, India sign wide-ranging agreements to deepen bilateral ties

India: No ration to 20 Odisha families for defecating in open

Berhampur (Odisha), Nov 1 (PTI) Over 20 families in Ganjam district have not been given ration supply after a panchayat body decided to stop the benefits from reaching people who were found defecating in open.

According to a decision taken at a panchayat meeting on October 20, the distribution of ration under the public distribution system (PDS) was stopped to over 20 families in last 11 days, Sushant Swain, the sarpanch of Goutami panchayat in Sanakhemundi block, said.

Delhi schools to be shut till Tuesday due to rising level of pollution

Pakistan: Survivors say burning train took 20 minutes to stop, 74 dead

MULTAN, Pakistan (AP) — A raging fire swept through a train in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab Province on Thursday, killing 74 people, and survivors said afterward it took nearly 20 minutes for the train to stop amid contradictory reports about the condition of the train’s brakes.

Three carriages were consumed by flames from a fire caused by a cooking gas stove and dozens of people jumped in panic from the speeding train.

Indian Kashmir formally ceases to be a state

31 October 2019; AFP: India's Muslim-majority region of Kashmir was formally divided on Thursday, almost three months after losing its autonomy in a move that triggered violence and stoked tensions with arch-rival Pakistan.

The move, announced in early August when India imposed a lockdown and sent in tens of thousands of extra troops, saw Jammu and Kashmir cease to be a state and split into two new administrative territories ruled directly from New Delhi.
