India: BJP Yuva Morcha leader's wife shot dead for dowry

Barabanki (UP), Jul 7 (PTI) The wife of a BJP youth wing leader was allegedly shot dead in Fatehpur area of Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district, police said on Sunday.

Snehlata (28), the wife of Rahul Singh, a district-level office bearer of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), was shot dead under mysterious circumstances late on Saturday night, the police said.

India: Maha village observes bandh in support of rape victim

Mumbai, Jul 7 (PTI) Villagers in Ahmednagar in Maharashtra Sunday observed a spontaneous shutdown protesting against the rape of a 50-year-old woman earlier in the week, police said.

The woman was raped and then threatened by one Gorakh Shingte on Wednesday in Karjat village of the district, over 260 kilometres from here, an official said.

Afghan officials say car bomb kills 12, wounds scores

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban carried out a devastating suicide car bombing in central Afghanistan Sunday that killed 12 people and wounded over 150 others, said Afghan officials.

The attack came as an all-Afghan peace conference, which includes the Taliban, was underway Sunday in Doha in an effort to end the country’s relentless wars.

A provincial council member, Hasan Raza Yousafi, said the car bomb exploded nearby an intelligence department compound in Ghazni, the capital of the province of the same name. The dead included eight security personnel, he said.

India: Plastic bag manufacturer gets 2-year RI for power theft, fined Rs 1.26 crore

Thane, Jul 6 (PTI) A court in Thane district has sentenced a plastic bag manufacturer to two years of rigorous imprisonment in a 15-year-old power theft case.

In the order passed recently, District Judge P P Jadhav also imposed a fine of Rs 1.26 crore on Abutalib Shamshuddin Khan (57). If he fails to pay the fine amount, he will have to undergo additional one year of simple imprisonment.

India: Man held for raping minor in Himachal's Hamirpur

Hamirpur (HP), Jul 6 (PTI) A man was arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur district in January this year, police said Saturday.

The arrested accused was identified as Anmol, they said, adding that he allegedly raped the 16-year-old girl of the same village on January 20.

India: Another sexual abuse case in Pollachi

Coimbatore, Jul 6 (PTI) In another case of suspected sexual abuse by a gang in Pollachi, nine people have been arrested on charges of sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl, police said Saturday.

They said the father of the girl had lodged a missing complaint Friday, based on which police started investigation and nabbed a youth, said to be her lover.

On interrogation, he confessed to sexually abusing the girl along with eight of his friends during the last few months, they said.

India: BJP MP's security men thrash toll plaza staff

Agra (UP), Jul 6 (PTI) Security men accompanying BJP MP and Scheduled Castes commission chairman Ram Shankar Katheria opened fire in the air and allegedly thrashed employees at a toll post here on Saturday, police said.

The police have registered an FIR against Katheria and another person after the early morning fracas at the toll plaza on the inner ring road.

An aide to the MP claimed that the security guards opened fire in self-defence when they were attacked at the toll plaza.

India: Teacher stopped from sacrificing girl child in Assam

Udalguri (Assam), Jul 6 (PTI) A school teacher and his family reportedly tried to sacrifice a three-year-old in their house in Udalguri district of lower Assam Saturday, but their plans were hindered when the locals intervened and informed the police and media.

The teacher and his son were injured in firing by the police who tried to control the situation, a police official said.

The situation turned violent when people of Ganakpara village in the district called in the police and the media after noticing smoke emanating from the teacher's house.

India: HC acquits man serving 30 yrs jail in gang-rape case

New Delhi, Jul 7 (PTI) A man, who in 2014 was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for raping a woman after confining her in a house for nine months, has been acquitted by the Delhi High Court, which said the case was filled with "inconsistencies and improbabilities".

Justice C Hari Shankar allowed the appeal of the man, Shiva, against the trial court's 2014 verdict by which he was convicted and awarded 30 years jail term.

The high court said the man shall be released from the jail forthwith unless his incarceration is required in any other case.

India: JD(S)-Cong govt under threat as 14 MLAs resign

Bengaluru, Jul 6 (PTI) Fourteen MLAs of the ruling JD(S)-Congress alliance in Karnataka have submitted their resignation to the Speaker, putting a question mark on the survival of the 13-month-old government.

If the resignations are accepted, the wobbly ruling coalition will lose majority in the 224-member Assembly as its strength will come down to 104.
