India: Customers fret & fume at post offices in Kanpur

Kanpur: The customers do not feel fine if the chairs marked for senior citizens are more often seen occupied by the agents on the upper floor of the Head Post Office here. Its building exists at the city's prime place that's why there remains ample crowd at the post office. 

When the nailed board on the wall specifically describes the arrangement of the chairs for elderly, the strictness is not followed, said an elder person who was requiring rest till the time the clerk was not available at his counter.

Pakistan says India refused its train to bring 200 Sikh pilgrims

Lahore/Amritsar, Jun 14; PTI/GANASHAKTI: Pakistan on Friday claimed that India refused to let its train cross the border and bring some 200 Sikh yatris to Lahore for Jore Mela festivities.

"Pakistan had issued visas to some 200 Indian Sikhs to attend the Jore Mela (death anniversary of Guru Arjun Dev jee) and they were due to arrive here by a Pakistani train on Friday. But the Indian government refused to allow the Pakistani train to enter its territory to bring the Sikh yatris here," Amir Hashmi, spokesperson for Evacuee Trust Property Board, told PTI.

India: Accused terrorist Pragya gets exemption from court appearence

Mumbai, Jun 15 (PTI) BJP Lok Sabha MP and Malegaon blast case accused Pragya Singh Thakur was Saturday exempted from appearance at a special court in connection with the matter.

Her lawyers sought an exemption from appearance from a Mumbai court as the regular Special Judge V S Padalkar, presiding over the case, was absent on Saturday, special public prosecutor Avinash Rasal said.

The exemption plea was granted by the in-charge court and matter was posted for hearing on Monday.

India: Mamata rubbishes MHA advisory, oppn parties second it

Kolkata, Jun 15 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday rubbished the claims of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) about "poor" law and order in the state, saying the Centre should send such advisories to states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat where "several murders have been reported in the last couple of years".

The MHA sought separate reports from the West Bengal government on the ongoing doctors' strike and on political violence that has left 160 people dead in the past four years.

India: BJP to lay siege to Karnataka CM's residence on Sunday

Bengaluru, Jun 15 (PTI) The BJP's Karnataka unit, which is on a round-the-clock sit-in since Friday protesting against the sale of land to JSW Steel at Ballari and other issues, has decided to "lay siege" to Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's official residence on Sunday.

State BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa along with a host of senior party leaders including former deputy chief minister R Ashoka, among others, spend the night at Anand Rao circle, the protest venue, as part of the stir, on Friday.

India retaliates, imposes higher tarrif on 28 US products

New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI) India on Saturday announced a hike in customs duties on as many as 28 US products, including almond, pulses and walnut, in response to higher tariffs imposed by Washington on Indian products like steel and aluminium.

The increased customs duties will come into effect from Sunday, an official notification said.

The move will hurt American exporters of these 28 items as they will have to pay higher duties, making those items costlier in the Indian market.

India: Spanish woman raped in Gurgaon, accused arrested

Gurgaon, June 15 (PTI) A 23-year-old Spanish woman was allegedly raped in DLF phase 1 here by a man who befriended her on social media, police said on Saturday.

The woman reached Guragon from Spain a couple of weeks ago to get internship with a multinational company. She was looking for a rented accommodation and had shared a post on Facebook in this regard.

The accused, Ajanya Nath, a resident of Anand Vihar in Delhi contacted her over Facebook and offered assistance in finding a rented flat.

India: 3 members of slain TMC leader's family killed

Baharampore (WB), Jun 15 (PTI) In another post-poll violence in West Bengal, three members of a family, stated to be Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists, were killed in Murshidabad district on Saturday, police said.

The three were family members of TMC leader Altaf Hossain who was murdered before the Lok Sabha elections.

It is alleged that those responsible for the killing of Hossain attacked his home at Kuchiamora village under Domkal police station and murdered the three.
