India: Man stabbed to death by wife in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Jan 20 (PTI) A 40-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by his wife with the help of her paramour, police said Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday night when the man, identified as Sunil Kumar, was sleeping in his house at Shahpur town here, Circle Officer Hariram Yadav said.

A case was registered against Kumar's wife Sudha and her paramour, and they both were arrested, he said.

City's student declared UP topper in JEE (Main)

KANPUR: City’s Naman Gupta has secured top position in the Joint Entrance Examination Main, 2019 with 100 percentile in Uttar Pradesh. His ranking stands sixth in the country. Head constable dies at police Chowki

KANPUR: A head constable (Diwan) died in Baghpur police Chowki of Kanpur Dehat district on Saturday evening. The pistol shot pierced into his forehead just above the nose. The fire was released from the service pistol of the Chowki in-charge.

It was as the news reports pointed out he had been living under tension and pressure for the past few days. A resident of Shikhwapur in Hardoi district, he had been staying at a room situated near the mess.

Indian EC may announce Lok Sabha poll schedule in March first week

New Delhi, Jan 18 : The dates for the Lok Sabha elections are likely to be announced in the first week of March, sources indicated on Friday.

The term of the present Lok Sabha ends on June 3.

The Election Commission is in the process of deciding the number of phases and the months in which polling would be held, they said.

The charting of the phases would also depend on the availability of security forces and other requirements, the sources said, adding the announcement of the mega exercise is likely to be made in first week of March.

India: 10-year-old raped by neighbour in UP

Bhadohi (UP), Jan 18 (PTI) A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a neighbour in the residential quarters of a primary health centre in Nai Bazar locality here, police said on Friday.

The minor, whose mother is a nurse, was raped by the husband of another nurse living in the same residential quarters when she was alone at home on Wednesday, Satya Narain Misra, Kotwali police station in-charge, said.

He said the girl narrated her ordeal to her mother on Thursday after persistent questioning, following which an FIR was lodged against the accused, Yogesh Yadav.

Kolkata, Jan 18 (PTI) Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav Friday said the nation is waiting for a new prime minister and a message of change would go out loud and clear from the the mega opposition rally of Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress on Saturday here.

Yadav alleged the incumbent government at the Centre was responsible for causing distress to people from all walks of life across the country, including farmers, youth, poor and traders, and everyone was looking for a change.

India: Train runs over 25 cows in UP's Hamirpur district

Banda (UP), Jan 18 (PTI) A train ran over 25 cows near Ragaol railway station in neighbouring Hamirpur district on Friday, officials said.

"The cows were found dead on the track. They were buried in a nearby field," Superintendent of Police (SP), rural, Hamirpur Hemraj Meena said.

Police personnel have been deployed in the area after some persons alleged the cows were deliberately kept on the track.

Police are investigating the matter.

Indian HC stays arrest of ex-BJP gen secy

Nainital (U'khand), Jan 18 (PTI) The Uttarakhand High Court on Friday stayed the arrest of former state BJP general secretary Sanjay Kumar, accused of sexual harassment by a woman.

Justice N S Dhanik also directed the state to file a reply within four weeks, after which the matter will be listed for final hearing, said Kumar's advocate, Aditya Singh.

A woman, who worked at the state Bharatiya Janata Party office, approached the police accusing Kumar of sexually harassing her for months by sending obscene text messages and behaving inappropriately with her.

India: Cong to seek explanation from 4 absentee MLAs

Bengaluru, Jan 18 (PTI) Congress will issue notices to four MLAs seeking explanation from them for their absence at the Congress Legislature Party meeting here Friday, CLP leader Siddaramaiah said.

Briefing reporters after the CLP meet, Siddaramaiah said after receiving the replies from the absentee lawmakers, the issue would be discussed with the party high command and state leaders before deciding on the next step.

India: Entire nation united to defeat BJP: Deve Gowda

Kolkata, Jan 18 (PTI) Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda Friday said the entire nation was united to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre.

He praised West Bengal chief minister and TMC president Mamata Banerjee and termed her efforts to make way for a secular government in the country as "historic".

"Mamata is a great leader. She is hard working and such people are required in politics," Gowda said on his arrival here ahead of Saturday's mega opposition rally.
