India: Two tanneries running on unauthoritised power supply sealed

KANPUR:  A total of 24 drums of the two tanneries were lately sealed on infringement of rules. Despite the power supply cut, these tanneries were found operational on illegal electricity connection in a sudden raid conducted by the team sent by the ADM (city) Vivek Srivastava. The KESCO has, in the meantime, filed an FIR at the Chakeri police station. The ACMs were continuously keeping vigil on the operation of the tanneries. The owners will not be allowed to run their units against norms, he cleared.

School bus overturns in Kanpur Dehat; 6 hurt

KANPUR: A minibus carrying school children overturned owing to the driver’s recklessness at Musa Nagar in Kanpur Dehat on Friday. As many as six students were seriously injured. The driver’s license was not even checked after the incident leave aside the vehicle’s fitness. Were authorities concerned maintaining a careless attitude like the minibus driver? It was reported that they were not aware of this mishap even.

Washington, Jan 17; PTI: US President Donald Trump has nominated three Indian Americans to key administration positions, as per the latest list of senior nominations sent by the White House to the Senate.

Rita Baranwal has been nominated for the post of assistant secretary of Energy (Nuclear Energy), Aditya Bamzai for Member of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board and Bimal Patel as the assistant secretary of Treasury.

Indian NGT slams Volkswagen for not depositing Rs 100 crore as per order

New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI) The National Green Tribunal (NGT) Thursday slammed German auto major Volkswagen for not depositing Rs 100 crore in accordance with its November 16, 2018 order and directed it to submit the amount within 24 hours.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel took strong exception to the non-compliance of its order by the automobile giant and asked it to give an undertaking that it will submit the amount by 5 PM Friday.

Sri Lanka considers big China loan to repay foreign debts

Colombo, Jan 17 (AP) Sri Lanka is considering a USD 300 million loan offer from the Bank of China as it prepares to repay foreign debts this year, a Finance Ministry official said.

The government has appointed a three-member committee to negotiate the deal, according to Finance Ministry spokesman M R Hasan.

The loan is repayable in three years, he said Wednesday.

Sri Lanka must repay USD 5.9 billion in foreign loans this year, of which 40 per cent needs to be serviced during the first three months.

It paid back USD 1 billion this week.

Pakistan SC asks govt to lift travel ban on opposition leaders

Islamabad, Jan 17 (PTI) Pakistan's Supreme Court Thursday ordered the government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan to lift the travel ban imposed on opposition leader Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and the Sindh Chief Minister, and asked the country's anti-corruption body to probe their involvement in Rs 35 billion 'fake accounts case'.

As many as 172 suspects were placed on the Exit Control List (ECL) on the recommendations of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed by the apex court. A person cannot fly abroad if his name is placed on the ECL.

India: BJP gen secy Ram Lal in hospital due to fever

Noida (UP), Jan 17 (PTI) BJP national general secretary (organisation) Ram Lal was admitted to a hospital in Noida where he was undergoing treatment for fever on Thursday.

He was running fever on Wednesday night and is still under observation, officials at Kailash Hospital here said.

"Some blood tests have been done and reports are awaited. He is fine but under observation," senior manager, Kailash Hospital, V B Joshi, told PTI.

Canadian woman molested at 5-star hotel in Mumbai

Mumbai, Jan 17 (PTI) A 35-year-old Canadian woman was allegedly molested by an employee of a city-based five-star hotel during her stay there, a police official said Thursday.

Sumit Rao (32), a staff member of the hotel located in Juhu area, has been arrested in connection with the alleged incident that took place on January 5, he said.

India: BJP MLAs being kept in "confinement" at Gurugram hotel

Bengaluru, Jan 17 (PTI) Hitting out at the BJP for making "futile attempts" to destabilise his government, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy Thursday accused the saffron party of keeping its MLAs in "confinement" at a hotel in Gurugram.

Grappling with the political turmoil triggered by reports that the BJP was luring Congress MLAs, Kumaraswamy rejected a charge by the saffron party that he was trying to poach their lawmakers.

India: Campaign against child labour to be launched in Jaipur

Jaipur, Jan 17 (PTI) With an aim to end child labour in the city, a special campaign 'Child Labour Free Jaipur' (CLFJ) will be launched on Friday.

"The campaign has been prepared by taking support from multiple stakeholders and this novel initiative will help in putting an end to child labour in Jaipur," said Karan Malik, programme manager of The British Asian Trust, part of the CLFJ campaign.
