Student held with handgun

KANPUR: Police recovered a handgun from a student studying in a famed school at Civil Lines under Kotwali police station here.

Upon getting information on dial 100, the police reached the school and recovered the gun from the student's scooty’s dickey.

When the police interrogated the student about the gun, he could not answer properly regarding the availability of the arm. A report under the arms act has been registered against the student.  

Three Naxal terrorists held in Sukma district

Raipur, Nov 16 (PTI) Three Naxals, one of them carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, have been arrested in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Sukma district, police said.

The rebels were apprehended Thursday evening from a forest near Kongdam village under Errabor police station limits by the district police, a local police official said.

The area is around 500 km away from Raipur.

One of the arrested Naxals, Tutti Bhima (22), was a Jan Militia commander and carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, the police official said.

India: Sisters abducted, gang-raped in Tripura

Agartala, Nov 16 (PTI) A 13-year-old and her elder sister were allegedly abducted and gang-raped for two days under confinement in Tripura's Unakoti district, police said Friday.

A 34-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, believed to be the prime accused, has been arrested, the police said.

According to the FIR, the sisters were waiting near a bridge in Kailashahar town -- 140 km from Agartala -- on November 9 to catch a vehicle home. They boarded an auto-rickshaw and the driver picked up two male passengers, who were known to him, on the way.

India: 38-year-old Dalit man killed in UP

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Nov 17 (PTI) A 38-year-old Dalit man was allegedly killed and his body dumped outside his house here, police said Saturday.

Manoj Kumar had gone to work and did not return home. Later, his body was dumped outside his house at Hareti village under Purkazi police station in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, a case has been registered against three people -- Surender, Yashpal and Sukhbir -- based on a complaint by the brother of the deceased.

India: Man sent to 10 years in jail for killing wife over dowry

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Nov 17 (PTI) A fast-track court has sentenced a man to 10 years' imprisonment for killing his wife over dowry in 2013.

According to the prosecution, judge Balraj Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on Mithun after holding him guilty under IPC Section 304 A on Friday.

Mithun's father and mother were acquitted in the case due to lack of evidence.

India: Former BJP MLA booked for beating up tehsildar

Bahraich, Nov 17 (PTI) Two cases were registered against former MLA Dilip Verma and his supporters for allegedly beating up a tehsildar in his chamber, police said Saturday.

Dilip Verma is the husband of sitting BJP MLA from Nanpara Assembly constituency Madhuri Verma.

In protest, the staff at the tehsil office locked its gate and abstained from work.

India: Monkey shot dead, buried in farm; FIR registered

Ballia (UP), Nov 17 (PTI) An FIR was registered against a person for allegedly shooting a monkey to death and burying it in a farm in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, police said Saturday.

The accused, Ram Narayan Ram, had shot the monkey dead and buried the animal in a farm outside Husenpur village in Sikandarpur area, the police said.

Acting on the complaint by the villagers on Tuesday, the forest department officials dug out the body and sent it for post-mortem, said Sikandarpur police station in-charge Anil Tiwari.

India: Shiv Sena questions PM Modi's silence over Rafale deal

Mumbai, Nov 15 (PTI) Questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence over the Rafale aircraft deal, the Shiv Sena Thursday said it has led to further "suspicion" among the people about something being amiss in it.

The Sena sarcastically said people will now believe there was no Rafale scam in the Defence Ministry like there was no irrigation scam in Maharashtra.

India: 28-yr-old woman raped by 2 men in Greater Noida

Noida, Nov 15 (PTI) A 28-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two men in Greater Noida, police said.

The incident took place on November 11 when the woman was returning home in the night from a local bazaar and the accused held her on the road, they said.

"A complaint was received at the Knowledge Park police station and an FIR was registered immediately. The police had carried out raids and the accused were arrested late Wednesday night from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida," Circle Officer, Greater Noida 1, Nishank Sharma said.

Hindutva can not be blamed on Hinduism: N Ram

Mumbai, Nov 15 (PTI) Hindutva is a "political project" and its rise can not be blamed on Hinduism, senior journalist N Ram said here Thursday.

Ram was speaking at a panel discussion on `Hindu Hinduism Hindutva' at Tata Literature Live festival.

"Hindutva is a political project and its founders made it clear. But don't confuse Hindutva with Hinduism," he said.

"Hindutva can not be blamed on Hinduism. Hindutva is a political project and cynically used," Ram added.
