India: Teenaged boy lynched over affair with classmate

Hazaribagh (Jharkhand), Nov 3(PTI) A 16-year-old schoolboy was lynched in in Hazaribagh district allegedly by family members a girl of her class with whom he reportedly had an affair, the police said Saturday.

Family members of the girl, a student of class 10, did not like the affair and allegedly abducted the boy on Friday.

They confined the teenager at a house in Kashiket village under Chouparan police station area and beat him up with lathis, police said.

Heavy snowfall in Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand

Srinagar/Shimla/Dehradun, Nov 3 (PTI) Heavy rain and snowfall lashed Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Uttarakhand on Saturday due to Western Disturbance, bringing down the mercury in the hill states.

Surface and air links between the Kashmir Valley and rest of the country were snapped while Srinagar witnessed snowfall in November for the first time since 2009.

India: Advocate files complaint against Tharoor over scorpion

Hyderabad, Nov 3 (PTI) A city-based advocate filed a complaint Saturday against Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, saying he has hurt Hindu sentiments with his alleged "scorpion" remark against Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently, the police said.

Legal opinion would be sought as Tharoor's speech was made in Bengaluru, they said.

According to the complainant, Tharoor's "comments hurt Hindu sentiments," police said.

Slow progress of development

KANPUR: Expressing dismay at the progress of development works in Kanpur Division, the divisional commissioner Subhash Chandra Sharma directed the officers to complete the works on the war footing.

In the review meeting here, it was found that there were pending development works of Rs 4.97 crore in Kanpur Nagar. Only 149 development works have been completed so far.

 

Rafale deal: SC seeks pricing details of 36 fighter jets from Centre in sealed cover

New Delhi, Oct 31 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre to place before it in a sealed cover within 10 days the pricing details of 36 Rafale fighter jets India is buying from France.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also said that details, including the steps in the decision making process for the procurement of jets, which could "legitimately" be brought into public domain, be made available to the parties who have filed petitions before it in the matter.

India: FIR against Asthana shows cognisable offences: CBI to Delhi HC

New Delhi, Nov 1 (PTI) The CBI on Thursday told the Delhi High Court that the FIR on bribery allegations against Special Director Rakesh Asthana and others shows cognisable offences.

The agency opposed Asthana's plea seeking quashing of the FIR and said a roving inquiry at this stage was not permissible.

It also told the court that the probe against Asthana was at a nascent stage and several incriminating documents as well as the role of other persons was under investigation.

Rafale deal prime example of cronyism, corruption: Yechury

New Delhi, Nov 1 (PTI) Welcoming the Supreme Court's order to Centre to submit details of pricing of the Rafale fighter jets India is buying from France, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury alleged Thursday that the Modi government has tried to "cover up" its secret and dishonest activities in the multi-crore defence deal.

Alleging that the Rafale deal was an example of cronyism and corruption, Yechury said he was hopeful the truth about the deal will come out as the apex court has insisted on facts.

India: Supreme Court asks Centre to file affidavit on Rafale deal

New Delhi, Oct 31 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Centre to file an affidavit within 10 days to say that the pricing in the Rafale fighter jet deal between India and France is exclusive and cannot be shared with the court.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices U U Lalit and K M Joseph also asked the Centre to share information which can be brought in the public domain with the petitioners.

New Delhi, Oct 31 (PTI) The following is the chronology of events relating to 1987 Hashimpura Massacre case leading up to the Delhi High Court on Wednesday sentencing 16 ex-policemen to life imprisonment for killing 42 people of a minority community in Uttar Pradesh.

- May 22, 1987: 50 Muslims picked up allegedly by Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel from Hashimpura village in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

- Victims later shot and bodies thrown into canal. 42 persons declared dead.

India: Rahul backs Ilaiah over DU's move to ban his books

Hyderabad, Oct 31 (PTI) Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has expressed solidarity with academician-activist Kancha Ilaiah over the alleged move by the Delhi University to ban three books written by him, calling it an attempt by the RSS to keep Dalits "disempowered" and propagate a "unilateral view of Hinduism".
