India: GST inspector arrested for accepting bribe in Rajasthan

Jaipur (RJ), Oct 23 (PTI) A central excise Goods and Services Tax (GST) inspector was arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a businessman in Rajasthan's Alwar district, an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said Tuesday.

The accused officer, Shayar Singh, had demanded Rs 4 lakh as a bribe from complainant Lokpal Saini for not taking action against him related to his GST evasion. The deal was settled at Rs 3 lakh, the official said.

Singh was arrested Monday night for allegdly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh by Alwar ACB sleuths here.

5 TN fishermen arrested by Lankan navy

Rameswaram (TN), Oct 23 (PTI) Five fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on the charge of fishing in their territorial waters, Fisheries officials said here Tuesday.

The fishermen from Jegadapattinam in Pudukottai were fishing near Neduntheevu at around midnight Monday when they were arrested and their nets seized, they said.

The arrested fishermen were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody till October 30, the officials added.

India: CBI likely to question its own Special Director soon

New Delhi, Oct 23 (PTI) The CBI may soon question its Special Director Rakesh Asthana in connection with alleged bribery to give relief to a businessman who was being probed in a case involving Moin Qureshi, sources said Tuesday.

They said the directions of the Delhi High Court on the plea of Asthana to maintain status quo in the matter do not bar the agency from carrying on its investigation and questioning of the accused.

Questioning of an accused does not come in the definition of coercive action which Asthana had sought to be stopped, they said.

Turkish prosecutors question more Saudi consulate employees

ISTANBUL, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Turkish prosecutors are questioning more employees of Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul as part of the investigation into the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, local media reported on Monday.

Five Turkish employees are currently giving testimony at the Istanbul prosecutor's office, the state-run Anadolu News Agency said, noting 17 more people from the consulate are also expected to be questioned as witnesses.

Petrol pumps in Delhi on strike demanding VAT cut

New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI) Petrol pumps across the national capital were shut on Monday in protest against the Delhi government's refusal to cut sales tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel.

But for a dozen company-owned-company-operated petrol pumps in the city, all pumps refused fuel, sending motorists running low on fuel and scrambling for alternate refuels.

"All 400 petrol pumps and linked CNG pumps shut operations from 6.00 am Monday and will remain closed till 5 am tomorrow (Tuesday)," said Delhi Petrol Dealers Association (DPDA) President Nishcal Singhania.

Imran Khan calls for dialogue to resolve Kashmir issue

Islamabad, Oct 22 (PTI) India should move to resolve the Kashmir issue through dialogue, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said Monday.

His remarks came a day after six civilians were killed after an explosive went off at an encounter site in Kulgam district of South Kashmir.

"Strongly condemn the new cycle of killings of innocent Kashmiris....by Indian security forces," Khan tweeted.

India: AAP forms frontal outfits ahead of Lok Sabha polls

New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has started forming new frontal organisations ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election, party's Delhi unit convener Gopal Rai said.

In the first phase of the exercise, youth wing and senior citizen wing of the party have been formed in Delhi, he said.

Party councilor in South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Ramesh Matiala will be head of the youth wing and Suresh Gupta will be president of the senior citizens' unit, Rai said.

India: Woman found dead over dowry dispute; husband arrested

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Oct 22 (PTI) The body of a woman was found hanging from the ceiling of her house in Jaroda village here in a suspected case of dowry death, police said Monday.

Rama (25), wife of Sonu, was found dead Sunday, they said.

Sonu has been arrested following a complaint by the victim's brother that the accused along with his family used to torture the woman for dowry, police said.

The brother claimed that his sister was strangulated to death by her husband and in-laws, they said.

India: Student gang raped in Muzaffarpur

Muzaffarpur, Oct 22 (PTI) A class nine student has been allegedly gang raped in her home in Bihar's Muzaffarpur town, police said on Monday.

The incident took place at the girl's residence at Imli chowk here on Sunday night, Mithanpura SHO Vijay Prasad Rai said.

Four persons, one of them the owner of a carton factory, forced their way into the girl's house, beat up her family members, tied their hands and gagged them before committing the alleged crime, he said.
