Kyrgyz-Tajik border conflict death toll rises to 81

BISHKEK, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan said on Sunday the death toll from their border conflict had risen to 81 people, as a fragile ceasefire held between two Central Asian nations for a second day and their mutual ally Russia urged a de-escalation.

The former Soviet republics clashed over a border dispute on Sept. 14-16, accusing each other of using tanks, mortars, rocket artillery and assault drones to attack outposts and nearby settlements. 

Five killed in road accident in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed in a traffic accident in Kyrgyzstan on Sunday after three cars crashed into each other as a horse ran onto the road, highways authorities said on Monday.

The accident occurred on the Balykchy-Ananyevo-Karakol highway in the northeastern Kyrgyz region of Issyk-Kul, said the Main Directorate for Road Traffic Safety of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Kyrgyzstan-China friendly relations model for other countries: Kyrgyz president

BISHKEK, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Kyrgyzstan-China friendly relations have been upgraded and become a role model of interstate relations, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov said here Wednesday.

Zhaparov made the remarks at a commemorative party marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kyrgyzstan and China.

Zhaparov in his speech spoke highly of the economic and social development of China and the traditional friendship between the peoples of the two countries.

Kyrgyzstan parliamentary election set to bolster president

BISHKEK, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Allies of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov appeared set to win Sunday's parliamentary election by a landslide, according to early figures, further cementing his grip on the Central Asian nation with close ties to Russia and China.

A Russian military airbase located in Kyrgyzstan allows Moscow to project power throughout the broader region and to locations such as Afghanistan.

Kyrgyzstan not to host U.S. military base: president

BISHKEK, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- There will be no U.S. military base in Kyrgyzstan, President Sadyr Zhaparov said here Saturday.

"We have a Russian base in Kant city. We don't need an American military base in the country. One military base is enough for us," Zhaparov said at his annual press conference, adding that the agreement with the United States on the latter's military base located outside Bishkek ended years ago.

Kyrgyz President appoints Akylbek Japarov Chairman of Cabinet of Ministers

BISHKEK, October 13. /TASS/: Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has signed a decree appointing his namesake Akylbek Japarov as Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration and approved the composition of the new Cabinet of Ministers.

BISHKEK, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The new Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, headed by Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the President's Administration Akylbek Zhaparov, took the oath of office on Wednesday.

The oath-taking ceremony was held at the country's parliament with the attendance of President Sadyr Zhaparov.

The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan approved the new structure and members of the Cabinet and President Zhaparov later signed a decree on the appointment of members of the Cabinet of Ministers.

Presidents of Russia, Kyrgyzstan discuss Kyrgyz-Tajik border situation over phone

BISHKEK, May 10. /TASS/: President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the situation on the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border during a telephone conversation on Monday, press service of the President of Kyrgyzstan reported on Monday.

Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan completed troops withdrawal from border - Border Service

BISHKEK, May 3. /TASS/: Bishkek and Dushanbe ended the process of withdrawing their military units from the border, the Kyrgyzstan’s Border Service says on Monday.

"The parties completed the withdrawal of extra forces and means from the state border line inward to their territories," the Service reports.

The joint commission comprising representatives of defense ministries of both countries continue working, the Service noted. The situation on the border and in adjacent areas is ‘stable’ now, without incidents and shooting.
