Iraq to regulate foreign trade from China in Yuan - state media

22 Feb 2023; MEMO: Iraq's Central Bank announced, on Wednesday, it plans to regulate foreign trade from China directly in Yuan as part of a bundle of measures to facilitate access to foreign currency, state media reported.

The reports did not give more details about plan, Reuters reports.

US to return 77 looted antiquities to Yemen

22 Feb 2023; MEMO: The US has agreed to return 77 antiquities to Yemen which had been stolen from the war-torn country, authorities confirmed yesterday. Before being repatriated to Yemen's internationally-recognised government, the ancient artefacts will be "temporarily" housed at the Washington-based Smithsonian Institution, which is a group of museums and galleries.

Gaza rockets, Israeli strikes follow deadly West Bank raid

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Palestinian militants in Gaza launched rockets at southern Israel and Israeli aircraft struck targets in the coastal enclave early Thursday after a deadly gun battle with Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank killed 10 Palestinians.

The bloodshed extends one of the deadliest periods in years between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank, where dozens of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the start of the year. Palestinian attacks on Israelis in 2023 have killed 11 people.

Turkiye Antakya turns into a ghost city after third quake

22 Feb 2023; MEMO: Trucks, emergency vehicles and excavators lined the desolate streets of Turkiye's Antakya, Tuesday night, after the third major earthquake in two weeks accelerated an exodus from the once-lively city, Reuters reports.

In the pitch-black streets, passing headlights revealed mounds of rubble, frames of broken windows and entangled rebar. Red and blue flashing lights from military and police vehicles reflected off the jagged facades of slanted buildings.

Israel: Establishing ties with Saudi Arabia will end Israel-Arab conflict: Netanyahu

22 Feb 2023; MEMO: Israel and Saudi Arabia normalising relations with each other would end the conflict with Palestinians and the wider Arab world, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has claimed.

Speaking at the Hartog National Security Conference in Tel Aviv yesterday evening, Netanyahu stated that "If we have the upper hand, I think we can expand the circle of peace, and if we expand the circle of peace to Saudi Arabia, I think we will actually end the Arab-Israeli conflict".

Iran Slaps “Retaliatory” Sanctions On EU, British Individuals, Entities

TEHRAN, Feb 22 (NNN-IRNA) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry, imposed yesterday, new sanctions on several individuals and entities of the European Union and Britain, for “supporting terrorism and inciting violence.”

The “retaliatory” move targets those supporting terrorism and terrorist groups, encouraging terrorist acts and violence against Iranians, interfering in Iran’s domestic affairs, spreading false information about Iran and escalating “economic terrorism” against the country, the ministry said.

UN Human Rights Chief Urged Israel To Halt Contentious Judiciary’s Overhaul

JERUSALEM, Feb 22 (NNN-MA’AN) – The UN human rights chief, urged yesterday, Israel’s far-right ruling coalition to halt a contentious plan to overhaul the country’s judiciary, saying, it might undermine the rule of law, human rights and judicial independence.

“These changes risk weakening human rights protections for all, but especially the most vulnerable communities and groups, less able to vindicate their rights,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, said in a statement.

Erdogan leaning towards holding Turkish elections in June -sources

ANKARA, Feb 22 (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan's government is inclined to hold Turkey's elections as scheduled in June, having cooled on the idea of postponing due to this month's devastating earthquake, three officials told Reuters on Wednesday.

Last month Erdogan, aiming to extend his rule into a third decade, said he was bringing the presidential and parliamentary votes forward to May to avoid holidays in June. Polls suggest they would be present his biggest electoral challenge yet.

UAE: Iraq to allow trade with China in yuan - state media

DUBAI, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Iraq's central bank said on Wednesday it planned to allow trade from China to be settled directly in yuan for the first time, in an attempt to improve access to foreign currency.

The central bank has been taking urgent steps to compensate for a dollar shortage in local markets, which prompted the cabinet to approve a currency revaluation earlier this month.
