Netanyahu's Justice Minister announces plans to undermine Israel's judicial system

06 Jan 2023; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Justice Minister announced on Wednesday a plan that will undermine the authority of the country's judicial system, reported The Times of Israel.

Israeli Justice Minister and Likud member Yariv Levin's plan would allow the far-right government to overrule decisions by the Supreme Court and pass it into law with a 61-MK majority.

Israel police arrest two suspects in Protestant cemetery vandalism

06 Jan 2023; MEMO: Israeli police said, on Friday, they had arrested two people suspected of vandalising a Protestant cemetery in Jerusalem earlier this week, Reuters reports.

Police said in a statement that extensive damage had been caused to gravestones at the Protestant Mount Zion Cemetery, calling it an "act of intentional vandalism and defacement."

Philippines’ Unemployment Rate Fell To 4.2 Percent In Nov

MANILA, Jan 6 (NNN-PNA) – The unemployment rate in the Philippines declined to 4.2 percent in Nov, compared to the previous month’s record of 4.5 percent, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said today.

PSA data showed 2.18 million Filipinos were out of work in Nov, lower than the 2.24 million recorded in Oct. PSA head, Dennis Mapa, said, the Nov unemployment rate was the lowest rate since Apr, 2005.

According to PSA, the employment rate rose to 95.8 percent, bringing the total employment for Nov to 49.71 million.

Iran, Qatar central bankers call for boosting banking ties

TEHRAN, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The governors of the central banks of Iran and Qatar have called for boosting banking relations between the two countries, Tasnim News Agency reported Friday.

The Central Bank of Iran (CBI) made the announcement on Thursday after a meeting between the newly-appointed governor of CBI Mohammad Reza Farzin and his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud Al-Thani in Qatar's capital Doha.

Türkiye's biggest cities facing drought amid insufficient rainfall

ISTANBUL, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Insufficient rainfall has caused severe drought throughout Türkiye, especially in the highly populated western and northwestern regions, according to data released Thursday.

Rainfall during the Oct. 1, 2022-Jan. 3, 2023 period dropped 31 percent compared to the previous same period across the country, the Turkish State Meteorological Service said.

With a 51.8 percent drop in rainfall compared to seasonal norms, Istanbul, a city of over 16 million residents, was hit the worst among Türkiye's major urban centers.
