Iran condemns latest EU, UK sanctions as "baseless, illegal"

TEHRAN, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian foreign ministry on Tuesday strongly condemned the latest EU and British sanctions against Iranian individuals and organizations.

Nasser Kanaani, the ministry spokesman, said in a press release that the sanctions are baseless and illegal, constituting interference in Iran's internal affairs.

Iran will respond proportionately to such non-constructive and futile measures, he added.

A day earlier, the European Union and Britain imposed sanctions against Iran in a coordinated action.

Türkiye detains 50 for suspected links to deadly Istanbul bomb attack

ANKARA, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye has detained 50 suspects over the deadly bomb attack in central Istanbul earlier this week, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said Tuesday.

The detainees include a Syrian woman who was caught soon after the incident for suspectedly planting the bomb that exploded on Istiklal avenue, Bozdag told the parliament.

"Afterward, many people who assisted this terrorist and were considered in contact with this terrorist were also detained," he said.

Imprisoned Egyptian activist calls off hunger strike

CAIRO (AP) — The family of imprisoned Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah said Tuesday they received a letter from him saying he has ended his hunger strike.

In a statement, the family said that Abdel-Fattah’s mother, Laila Soueif, received a short note in her son’s handwriting via prison authorities. The letter is dated Monday. In it, he asks her to come for her monthly visit to him in prison on Thursday.

Egypt: Climate activist blasts leaders holding onto fossil projects

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (AP) — Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate slammed world leaders Tuesday who persist in backing new fossil fuel projects despite science warnings that this will push temperatures across the planet to dangerous highs.

Countries agreed in the 2015 Paris climate accord to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) by the end of the century if possible. But scientists say that with about 1.2 Celsius (21. Fahrenheit) of warming already reached, that target is likely to be missed.

Lebanon condemns Israel strike on Syria, saying it violates Lebanese airspace

According to Syria's military, the Israeli strike on the Shayrat Airbase in Homs province yesterday killed two soldiers and injured three. A warehouse for Iranian militias and Hezbollah were also destroyed, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported.

Turkiye opens new housing settlement for displaced Syrians

During a visit to northern Syria yesterday, Turkish Interior Minister, Suleyman Soylu spoke at a ceremony in the newly-built settlement of 'Musiad', consisting of 600 brick bungalows at Mashhad Ruhin near the Turkish border in Idlib province.
