Iran’s president tries to assuage anger as protests continue

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Tuesday appealed for national unity and tried to allay anger against the country’s rulers, even as the anti-government protests that have engulfed the country for weeks continued to spread to universities and high schools.

Raisi acknowledged that the Islamic Republic had “weaknesses and shortcomings,” but repeated the official line that the unrest sparked last month by the death of a woman in the custody of the country’s morality police was nothing short of a plot by Iran’s enemies.

India: Will take 4-5 yrs to properly resolve stubble burning issue

New Delhi, Oct 4 (PTI) Crop diversification is not a long-term solution to the problem of stubble burning and it will take four to five years to properly resolve the issue, a senior official of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has said.

Crop diversification and using short duration varieties of paddy are among several initiatives proposed by the Centre and experts to resolve the stubble burning issue in Punjab and Haryana.

Depositor retrieves savings by force from Lebanon bank in Beirut

3 October 2022; MEMO: A Lebanese depositor withdrew his savings by force from a bank in Beirut on Monday, according to a banking association, Anadolu News Agency reports.

The Association of Depositors said, on Twitter, that the depositor stormed a Blom Bank branch in Haret Hreik in the southern suburb of Beirut and "retrieved his savings".

The Association shared a video of the bank holdup on its Twitter page.

Israeli forces kill 2 young Palestinians in occupied West Bank

3 October 2022; MEMO: Israel's occupation forces raided the Jalazone refugee camp in the occupied West Bank today and fired at least 30 bullets at three young Palestinians in their vehicle, Wafa has reported. Two of the Palestinians were killed, while the third was wounded.

The two dead men were named as Basel Basbous, 19, and Khaled Anbar, 22, both residents of Jalazone. The man who was wounded was named as Rafat Habash, 19, from Beir Zeit. All three were reported to be construction workers.

USA: Jewish American journalist sacked for calling Israel 'apartheid' state

3 October 2022; MEMO: In the latest crackdown on free speech when Palestine is the topic, Jewish American journalist Katie Halper has been fired by The Hill for calling Israel an "apartheid state". Known for her podcast, Rising, the 41-year-old had drafted a monologue in response to the recent attacks on Rashida Tlaib.

OPEC+ mulls largest cuts since 2020 pandemic crisis

3 October 2022; MEMO: The OPEC+ group of oil producers is discussing output cuts of more than 1 million barrels per day (bpd), OPEC sources said, and voluntary cuts by individual members could come on top of that, making it the largest cut since 2020, Reuters reports.

The meeting will take place on 5 October against a backdrop of falling oil prices and months of severe market volatility which prompted top OPEC+ producer, Saudi Arabia, to say the group could cut production.

Turkiye's inflation climbed to a new 24-year high of more than 83%

3 October 2022; MEMO: Turkiye's inflation climbed to a new 24-year high of more than 83 per cent for September, the country's official body for statistics, TUIK, said Monday, Reuters reports.

According to the report, consumer prices in September grew by 3.08 per cent, and annually by 83.45 per cent.

The domestic producer price index was up 4.78 per cent from the previous month, and up a whopping 151.5 per cent year on year, report added.
