Turkiye condemns US lifting of arms embargo on Cyprus, warning of possible arms race

17 Sep 2022; MEMO: Turkiye has condemned the United States' decision to fully lift its embargo on Cyprus from next year, saying that the move could result in an arms race on the island.

In a statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry today, it warned that the US' decision will "further strengthen the Greek Cypriot side's intransigence and negatively affect efforts to resettle the Cyprus issue."

Bahrain Reported First Monkeypox Case

MANAMA, Sept 17 (NNN-BNA) – Bahrain’s Health Ministry reported the kingdom’s first monkeypox case yesterday.

The patient, a 29-year-old male expatriate, arrived in the kingdom after recent overseas trips, the ministry said in a statement.

“The patient is exhibiting symptoms and has been isolated while receiving the necessary care, based on the adopted protocols,” it added, without elaborating.

The ministry said, it was using contact tracing and disease surveillance systems, to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Banks Across Lebanon To Close For Three Days As Angry Depositors Storm Branches

BEIRUT, Sept 17 (NNN-NNA) – Lebanese banks will close for three days starting Monday amid mounting security concerns, local media reported.

The Association of Banks in Lebanon announced the closures, after angry depositors across the country stormed banks yesterday, demanding their savings, according to a TV channel.

More than five banks, yesterday, were broken into and raided by depositors, some of whom wielded pistols and brought fuel jerricans, threatening to commit arson.

Turkey's Erdogan targets joining Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, media reports say

ISTANBUL, Sept 17 (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan said he was targeting membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for NATO-member Turkey, broadcaster NTV and other media said on Saturday.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the SCO summit in Uzbekistan before heading to the United States.

"Our relations with these countries will be moved to a much different position with this step," Erdogan said.

"When asked if he meant membership of the SCO, he said, "Of course, that's the target".

Israeli strikes kill 27 Syrian soldiers in 2022: war monitor

DAMASCUS, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Israel has carried out 25 missile strikes inside Syria in 2022, killing 27 government soldiers and injuring 23 civilians, a war monitor reported Saturday.

The Israeli attacks destroyed about 73 targets, including buildings, warehouses, headquarters and vehicles, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The injured include a girl and at least three women, the Britain-based watchdog added.

Reconciliation Talks Between Palestinian Factions To Resume In Algeria In Oct: Official

RAMALLAH, Sept 16 (NNN-WAFA) – Reconciliation talks between rival Palestinian factions, to end more than 15 years of internal division, will resume in Algeria in Oct, a senior Palestinian official announced yesterday.

Wassel Abu Yousef, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), executive committee, told reporters in the West Bank city of Ramallah that, the reconciliation dialogue in Algeria would include leaders of 14 Palestinian factions.

Depositors storm four banks as Lebanon’s cash crisis worsens

BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanese depositors, including one armed with a hunting rifle, broke into at least four banks Friday to demand their trapped savings, a sign of growing chaos in the small Mediterranean nation amid a historic economic meltdown.

Friday’s raids were the most in a single day, and raised the possibility that more desperate depositors would try to extract their money by force. The break-ins reflect public anger at the banks’ strict informal controls on cash withdrawals, a byproduct of the financial crisis.

India: NGT directs UP govt to pay Rs 100 crore for improper liquid waste management

New Delhi, Sep 16 (PTI) The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to pay Rs 100 crore for improper management of liquid waste in the districts of Pratapgarh, Raebareli, and Jaunpur.

A bench headed by chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said that as per the report of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), bio-remediation was not resulting in the reduction of pollution load.
