Tunisia: Food, fuel shortages hit shops

28 August 2022; MEMO: Some Tunisian shops are rationing goods including cooking oil, sugar and butter, while big queues have hit petrol stations amid a fuel shortage as the government navigates a looming crisis in public finances, Reuters reports.

Some grocery shops have restricted customers to single packs of items in short supply, while queues outside petrol stations have blocked traffic in parts of the capital.

Russia, South Korea sign $2.2bn deal to build Egypt's first nuclear plant

28 August 2022; MEMO: South Korea has entered into an agreement worth $2.25 billion (3 trillion won) with Russia's state-owned Rosatom to provide buildings and components for Egypt's first nuclear plant.

28 August 2022; MEMO: According to a statement released on Thursday by South Korea's energy ministry, the state-owned Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co, won the contract and was selected as the sole bidder for the part of the project at Egypt's El-Daaba in December 2021.

Israeli court extends detention of Islamic Jihad leader Bassam al-Saadi

29 August 2022; MEMO: An Israeli military court extended on Sunday the detention of senior Islamic Jihad leader Bassam al-Saadi, from the West Bank city of Jenin, until Wednesday, Palestine Prisoners' Club (PPC) said.

The PCC said in a brief statement that the Israeli military court in Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank postponed its sentence against Al-Saadi to 31 August.

Israel: Former intelligence chiefs urge to prepare for military action against Iran

29 August 2022; MEMO: A number of former Israeli intelligence and army chiefs have urged Israel to prepare for possible military action against Iran as the country is close to a nuclear bomb, Israel Hayom reported on Sunday.

Former Head of the Israeli Defence Ministry's Political-Military Affairs Bureau, Amos Gilad, and former National Security Adviser Major General Yaakov Amidror, said that Israel should prepare to protect itself as efforts to prevent the nuclear deal will yield for no results.

Israel: 65% of Israelis reject military operation in Gaza; Polls

29 August 2022; MEMO: Israel's public have rejected suggestions that the Israeli army should opt for a wide-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip to restore calm for settlements near the coastal enclave, an Israeli TV reported on Sunday.

Israel's Channel 13 TV conducted a poll, asking Israelis to comment on Chief of Staff of Israeli Army Aviv Kohavi's remarks about a military operation in Gaza to achieve calm for 15 years.

Egypt, U.S., Spain Held Joint Naval Drills In Mediterranean

CAIRO, Aug 28 (NNN-MENA) – The Egyptian, U.S. and Spanish navies, held a joint maritime exercise within the range of Egypt’s Northern Fleet, in the Mediterranean Sea, said the Egyptian military, yesterday.

Ships of the U.S. and Spanish naval forces, took part in the joint drills, following their visit to Egypt’s Alexandria Naval Base, said Egyptian military spokesman, Gharib Abdel-Hafez, in a statement.

Iran Ready To Donate Fuel To Lebanon: Ambassador

BEIRUT, Aug 28 (NNN-NNA) – Iranian ambassador to Lebanon, said yesterday that, his country is ready to donate fuel oil, if Lebanon needed so.

“Iran is keen to provide complete support for Lebanon. Our country is ready to donate fuel oil for Lebanon, upon the approval of the Lebanese government and the official visit of a delegation to Tehran, for direct coordination on this matter,” Mojtaba Amani was quoted as saying.

He made the remarks, during a meeting with Ali Youssef Hejazi, secretary-general of the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party in Lebanon, according to the report.

Four Daesh Militants Killed In Clashes With Security Forces In E. Iraq

BAGHDAD, Aug 28 (NNN-NINA) – Four Daesh militants were killed yesterday, in Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala, the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said, in a statement.

The Daesh militants, from Himreen Lake in Diyala, were trying to destroy surveillance cameras, which were installed by the security forces to monitor their movement along their routes in the mountainous Himreen area, according to the statement.

The security forces tracked down the militants and clashed with them, leaving four militants killed and two others wounded, it added.

Iran continues reviewing U.S. response over nuclear deal proposal

TEHRAN, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Tehran's ongoing "precise examination" of the U.S. response to its viewpoints on the European Union (EU) proposed draft agreement on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal will continue at least by the end of Friday, said Iran's Nour News on Sunday.

The news outlet, which is affiliated with the country's Supreme National Security Council, wrote in a post on its Twitter account that the careful review of "the U.S. responses to Iran's modified pivots" regarding the EU's proposal is still going on "at expert levels" in Tehran.
