Israel: Arab Knesset members back government against opposition no-confidence motion

Foreign food delivery drivers stage rare strike in Dubai

10 May 2022; MEMO: Foreign food-delivery workers in the United Arab Emirates staged a mass walk-out on Monday, calling for better pay and working conditions in a rare act of industrial action in the Gulf State, Reuters reports.

The strike comes after foreign workers, this month, forced another food delivery company to suspend plans to cut their earnings after walking off the job in protest against the move.

Saudi economy to exceed $1tn for first time, says IMF

10 May 2022; MEMO: The economy of Saudi Arabia is expected to exceed $1 trillion by the end of the year, for the first time in the kingdom's history, according to recent forecasts by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Last month, amid a surge in oil prices, the IMF revised its economic forecast for Saudi Arabia anticipating a 2.8 per cent growth.

Israel does not need US permission to build settlements in occupied WB: FM

11 May 2022; MEMO: Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said Tel Aviv does not need permission from the United States to build settlements in the occupied West Bank, the Jerusalem Post reported.

"Israel is a sovereign state and does not ask for permission to operate in its territory," Lapid told reporters in the Knesset yesterday.

Tunisia boosts security for seasonal pilgrimage to historic synagogue

11 May 2022; MEMO: Tunisia has tightened its security in recent days in preparation for the annual pilgrimage of Jews to El-Ghriba Synagogue on the island of Djerba in the south-east of the country, Anadolu has reported. Significant reinforcements have been deployed on access routes to the island, as well as checkpoints in the general tourist area.

Interior Minister Taoufik Charfeddine visited Djerba on Tuesday to oversee the latest security preparations before the start of the pilgrimage season, which will last from 14 to 22 May.

Israel won't do anything in Lebanon: Hezbollah chief

11 May 2022; MEMO: Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, said he had received a message through diplomatic channels indicating Israeli confirmations that Tel Aviv does not want to do attack Lebanon.

Speaking to a gathering of the group's supporters in Beirut's southern suburbs yesterday, Nasrallah said: "We do not trust the enemy, nor his messages, nor the statements of its prime minister. Therefore, our alertness and our readiness will remain until the end of the Israeli manoeuvres."

Israel moves Palestinian hunger striker to hospital as health critical

11 May 2022; MEMO: Palestinian administrative detainee in Israel, Khalil Awawdeh, was moved to hospital as his health is now critical after his 68-day hunger strike, his lawyer Ahlam Haddad said.

Forty-year-old Awawdeh suffers from continuous headaches, pain in the joints, fatigue, irregular heartbeats, difficulty breathing, is vomiting blood and lossing weight, Haddad said.

He was previously transferred to hospital but then returned to Ramle Prison clinic despite his health condition.

Iran shells Iraq's Kurdish capital to target 'terrorist bases'

11 May 2022; MEMO: Iran's Revolutionary Guards shelled an area north of the Kurdish Iraqi capital of Erbil today, targeting what Iranian state television described as terrorist bases, Reuters reports.

Iraqi Kurdish media reported that an artillery shell had landed in a village in the Sidekan area near the Iranian border, around 100 kilometres northeast of Erbil.

Iranian state TV said no casualties had been reported and details of the attack would be announced shortly.

Jordanians condemn Israel remarks on custodianship of Jerusalem holy sites

11 May 2022; MEMO: The Islamic Movement in Jordan yesterday condemned Israeli remarks on the Jordanian custodianship over Jerusalem, Quds Press reported.

The Islamic Action Front, the political arm of the Islamic Movement in Jordan, said: "[Israeli Prime Minister Naftali] Bennett's remarks amount to flagrant aggression on Jordanian sovereignty and Jordan's historical role in occupied Jerusalem."
