India: Rajya Sabha bids farewell to 72 retiring members

New Delhi, Mar 31 (PTI) Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday said legislators across the country should be driven by passion, performance and procedural integrity, and desist from disrupting law making bodies.

He also asked them to uphold the honour and privilege bestowed on them by the people.

Naidu made the remarks in the House as the Rajya Sabha bade farewell to 72 members retiring during the March July period this year.

India: 1,020 sq km forest cover lost in Arunachal Pradesh in 2021

New Delhi, Mar 31 (PTI) Forest cover in the Northeast reduced by 1,020 sq km in 2021 compared to the area in 2019 mainly due to anthropogenic pressure and developmental activities, the government told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Responding to a query on loss of forest and tree cover in the area, Minister of State for Environment Ashwini Choubey said that as per the latest India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2021, the forest cover of the region stood at 1,69,521 sq km while the tree cover stood at 4,574 sq km.

Saudi-led coalition to suspend military operations in Yemen during Ramadan

30 March 2022; MEMO: The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthi rebel group in Yemen said, late Tuesday, that it will suspend military operations to ensure the success of consultations and to create a positive environment for peacemaking efforts during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan upon the request of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Anadolu News Agency reports.

30 March 2022; MEMO: The historical campaign to end Israel's occupation of Palestine is nearing its "South Africa moment", according to Omar Barghouti. The Palestinian activist spoke about the campaign he co-founded in 2005, the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, with Democracy for the Arab world Now (DAWN), in light of the Western response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine which include harsh sanctions against Moscow.

UAE, Israel sign driving license agreement

31 March 2022; MEMO: The UAE and Israel have signed an agreement permitting driving license holders from each country to obtain licenses in the other.

According to the Khaleej Times the agreement, which will reportedly be implemented soon, will mean motorists will just need to present their original driving license and they will be issued a new one in the host country.

Israel deploys 1,000 extra soldiers across occupied Palestinian territories

31 March 2022; MEMO: Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz ordered the deployment of 1,000 extra soldiers on Wednesday to support the police in the occupied West Bank and on the nominal border with the besieged Gaza Strip, his office has confirmed. Although still in training, the soldiers will be deployed according to police requirements.

The Israeli occupation army has deployed 12 extra battalions in the occupied West Bank and two around the fenced "border" with Gaza since last week.

Turkey: buying S-400 defence system from Russia a 'closed issue'

31 March 2022; MEMO: Turkey's Presidential Spokesperson, Ibrahim Kalin, has said that the purchase of the S-400 missile defence system from Russia is a "closed issue" as he stressed that his country, which has the second largest army within NATO, needs such a system. Kalin made the comment earlier this week to CNN's Becky Anderson.

"We have told the Americans and others, that the whole S-400 file is closed," he explained. "We are not thinking of sending it anywhere."

Tunisia must rationalise subsidies and control wages to reduce budget deficit, says IMF

31 March 2022; MEMO: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Wednesday that Tunisia must take a series of measures to reduce the budget deficit and revive the economy, Anadolu has reported, including strict control over the public sector wage bill and better targeted subsidies. An IMF team visited Tunisia last week for talks on the economic reform programme.
