USA: Michigan Democrats are lining up to replace Republican Rep. John James in his battleground district

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A battleground House race in Michigan that national Democrats are keying in on to help them flip the chamber in 2024 is growing increasingly crowded with an announcement Thursday by Carl Marlinga that he’ll again challenge Republican U.S. Rep. John James for the seat.

Marlinga’s 2024 campaign in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, which was announced in a news release provided to The Associated Press, comes after the Democrat lost last year by half a percentage point to James, who had a significant fundraising advantage.

USA: Tropical Storm Lee strengthens into a hurricane as it churns across Atlantic toward Caribbean

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Tropical Storm Lee strengthened into a hurricane on Wednesday as it churned through the open waters of the Atlantic on a path that would take it near the northeast Caribbean.

The hurricane was located about 1,130 miles (1,815 kilometers) east of the northern Leeward Islands. It had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 14 mph (22 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center.

U.S. federal judge orders Texas to remove floating barriers on U.S.-Mexico border river

HOUSTON, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. federal judge on Wednesday ruled that Republican-led Texas must remove floating barriers it set up to deter migrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in heavily trafficked areas of the Rio Grande.

"Unfortunately for Texas, permission is exactly what federal law requires before installing obstructions in the nation's navigable waters," Federal District Judge David A. Ezra wrote in his order, issuing a preliminary injunction to remove these barriers and stop building further obstructions in the river.

Strike at marine port terminals in July affects Canada's imports, exports

OTTAWA, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- A port strike at British Columbia marine terminals significantly affected Canada's imports and exports in July, Statistics Canada said Wednesday.

The strike, which activity began on July 1, disrupted regular operations for more than 13 days, the national statistical agency said, adding that Canada's international trade may also be affected by this situation in subsequent months as well, as freight backlogs continue to be cleared.

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Greenhouse gas concentrations, global sea level and ocean heat content reached record highs in 2022, according to an annual review of the global climate published online on Wednesday.

The State of the Climate report, the 33rd annual assessment compiled by the National Centers for Environmental Information at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is based on contributions from more than 570 scientists in over 60 countries.
