WEF Annual Meeting Opens With Focus On Cohesive, Sustainable Development

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 22 (NNN-XINHUA) – The World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting, opened here yesterday with a focus on renewing the concept of stakeholder capitalism, to overcome income inequality, societal division and the climate crisis.

Themed “Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World,” the meeting convened around 3,000 participants from over 100 countries and regions.

Sri Lanka Earns Record 5.3 Billion USD From Apparel Exports In 2019

COLOMBO, Jan 22 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sri Lanka earned a record 5.3 billion U.S. dollars from its apparel exports in 2019, showing a 5.1 percent year on year increase, according to the Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF).

However, a slight decline in export earnings was recorded in Dec, 2019, due to a slowdown in the key EU and U.S. markets, while retail sales in Sri Lanka’s largest apparel export market, the United Kingdom, remained sluggish because of Brexit, the report seen on Wednesday (today), said.

Pessimism at record level among CEOs: PwC survey

Davos, Jan 21 (PTI) A record level of pessimism has creeped into the CEOs across the world regarding the worldwide economic growth, a much sought after survey showed here on the first evening of the WEF annual meeting.

For the first time, more than half of the CEOs surveyed by global consultancy PwC said they believe the rate of global GDP growth will decline.

India's economic growth estimated 4.8% by IMF, Chidambaram thinks it's lower

New Delhi, Jan 21 (PTI) With the IMF lowering India's economic growth estimate for the current fiscal to 4.8 per cent, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday claimed an attack on the world body and its chief economist Gita Gopinath by government ministers was imminent.

He also alleged that the growth figure of 4.8 per cent given by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is after some "window dressing" and he won't be surprised if it goes even lower.

Iran’s FM Not To Attend Davos Meeting: Spokesman

TEHRAN, Jan 21(NNN-ISNA) – Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif will not attend the 2020 World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, Switzerland this week, the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi announced on Monday.

Speaking to reporters at his weekly press conference, Mousavi said Zarif was scheduled to attend the Davos meeting, but “they abruptly changed the schedule despite the primary planning and the official invitation.”

Therefore, Zarif will not participate in the forum in Davos, the spokesman said.

ASEAN Willing To Further Enhance ASEAN-China Strategic Partnership

JAKARTA, Jan 21 (NNN-XINHUA) – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), stands ready to work with China, to lift the ASEAN-China strategic partnership to a new high, ASEAN Secretary-General, Lim Jock Hoi, said here.

He made the remarks while receiving credentials presented by China’s new Ambassador to ASEAN, Deng Xijun, at the ASEAN Secretariat. He said, ASEAN attaches great importance to its ties with China, as well as, the important role China has played in the East Asian cooperation.

Zimbabwe Acquires Aircraft From Malaysia To Boost State Airline Operations

HARARE, Jan 21 (NNN-XINHUA) – Zimbabwe’s state-owned airline, Air Zimbabwe, took delivery of one of two Boeing 777-200 aircraft, bought from Malaysia as part of efforts to revive its struggling national carrier.

Transport and Infrastructural Development minister, Joel Biggie Matiza, flew in with the new plane which was received at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by Vice President, Constantino Chiwenga.

JPMorgan Chase buys new Paris building for post-Brexit move

New York, Jan 20 (AFP/PTI) US bank JPMorgan Chase has said it had purchased a new building in the heart of Paris capable of holding 450 people, the latest step in its plans to move out of London following Brexit.

The newcomers will join the 260 employees already working in the French capital, the bank said in a statement on Sunday.

LANGKAWI, Malaysia, Jan 20 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The launching of the 5G Demonstration Projects (5GDP) here Sunday night is an important milestone as Malaysia moves a step closer towards implementing 5G in the near future, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

He said 72 use cases were being demonstrated across 56 5G live sites in six states and added that in Langkawi alone, there were 35 use cases at 25 live sites.
