India: Sensex cracks below 37,000-mark, tanks 531 points

Mumbai, Aug 5 (PTI) Domestic equity benchmarks BSE Sensex fell over 531 points to trade below 37,000-mark in early trade on Monday following persistent foreign fund outflows amid negative global cues.

Kashmir issue also spooked investors' sentiment after the authorities stepped up security at vital installations and in sensitive areas, suspended mobile internet services and either "arrested" or "detained" several leaders in fast-paced developments on Sunday night.

Indian Rupee plummets amid Kashmir tension

Mumbai, Aug 5 (PTI) The rupee was trading down by 77 paise at 70.37 against the American currency on Monday, amid uncertainty over Kashmir Issue and US-China trade related concerns.

In a highly volatile trade, the rupee opened at 70.20 at the interbank forex market and touched a low of 70.59 and a high of 70.18 against the American currency.

The domestic currency was trading at 70.37 against the American unit, down 77 paise over its previous closing price at 1211 hours.

The rupee had settled at 69.60 against the US dollar on Friday.

Asian stock tumble after China lets yuan sink

BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets fell for a third day Monday after China allowed its yuan to sink to its lowest level this year following President Donald Trump’s latest tariff threat.

The main indexes in Tokyo and Hong Kong both fell 2.4% while Shanghai, South Korea and Australia also retreated.

China’s central bank allowed the yuan to sink below an exchange rate of seven to the dollar. The level has no economic significance but might fuel trade tension with Washington, which complains a weak currency swells Chinese exports and hurts foreign competitors.

Turkey to use F-35 missile with national combat jet

3 Aug 2019; AA: Air-to-surface missiles developed for the F-35 fighter jet could be used with Turkey’s locally-developed national combat aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the country's industry and technology minister said on Saturday. 

Two countries developed the SOM-J cruise missile, said Mustafa Varank during a press briefing at the 22nd National Sky Observation Festival in Antalya.

Iran: Non-oil exports from Khorramshahr up by 59%

Abadan, Aug 4, IRNA – Director General of Khorramshahr port and Maritime Organization Nourollah Assadi said on Sunday that non-oil exports from Khorramshahr port grew up by 59% since the beginning of the current Iranian year (beginning from March 21) compared to the preceding period.

Since the beginning of this year, some 738,483 tons of goods have been loaded in Khorramshahr port, which is 59 percent higher than the same period last year, Asadi said.

Trump warns China of substantial increase in import tariffs

Washington, Aug 3 (PTI) US President Donald Trump has warned of imposing substantial tariffs on imports from China if the trade negotiations did not go well.

"China has to do a lot of things to turn it around. But you'll be seeing. They've got to do a lot of things. It (tariff increase) goes on September 1," Trump said on Friday, a day after he announced to impose 10 per cent tariff on Chinese products worth nearly USD 300 billion.

This is in addition to the 25 per cent import tariff on Chinese products worth USD 250 billion.

'No plans to integrate S-400 into any NATO system'

2 Aug 2019; MEMO: NATO does not plan the integration of Russian S-400 anti-air missile system into any air and missile defense system of the alliance, NATO Secretary General said Friday. 

"There are no plans to integrate the Russian S-400 into any NATO integrated air and missile defense system," Jens Stoltenberg said in a news conference on the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty in Brussels.

India Rupee slumps 54 paise to 69.60 vs USD

Mumbai, Aug 2 (PTI) The rupee dived 54 paise on Friday to close at an over six-week low of 69.60 against the US dollar as soaring crude oil prices and a fresh flare up in US-China trade tensions weighed on emerging market currencies.

Global markets tumbled and safe-haven assets like the Japanese yen gained after President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that the US will impose an additional 10 per cent tariff on USD 300 billion worth Chinese imports, which Beijing vowed to retaliate.

Israel lobbied US to drop F-35 deal with Turkey

2 Aug 2019; MEMO: Israel secretly lobbied the US to block Turkey from purchasing its F-35 fighter jets in an effort to maintain its military edge in the region, according to Israeli media reports.

Tel Aviv began urging the White House to drop Ankara from its F-35 program soon after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan approved the purchase of the S-400 missile defence system from Russia, Israeli Channel 12 reported yesterday.

Will be ready to mediate Kashmir, if asked: Trump

Washington, Aug 2 (PTI) US President Donald Trump has said the issue of Kashmir is a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan but he would be happy to mediate if they want him to do so.

Last week, Trump had made a stunning claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him to mediate on the vexed issue during their meeting in Japan, evoking a sharp reaction from India which denied Modi making any such request.
