Italy: Wreck of ancient Roman cargo ship found off the coast near Rome

ROME, July 28 (Reuters) - The wreck of an ancient Roman cargo ship from more than 2,000 years ago has been found off the coast near Rome, the arts squad of Italy's Carabinieri police said on Friday.

The ship was located off the port of Civitavecchia, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) north-west of the Italian capital, on a sandy seabed at a depth of about 160 metres (525 ft), a statement said.

'Exiled' Russian mercenary boss Prigozhin hails Niger coup, touts services

MOSCOW, July 28 (Reuters) - Wagner mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, who remains active despite leading a failed mutiny against the Russian army's top brass last month, has hailed Niger's military coup as good news and offered his fighters' services to bring order.

A voice message on Telegram app channels associated with Wagner which they said was Prigozhin did not claim involvement in the coup, but described it as a moment of long overdue liberation from Western colonisers and made what looked like a pitch for his fighters to help keep order.

Malaysia: Singapore hangs first woman in 19 years after she was convicted of trafficking 31 grams of heroin

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Singapore conducted its first execution of a woman in 19 years on Friday and its second hanging this week for drug trafficking despite calls for the city-state to cease capital punishment for drug-related crimes.

Activists said another execution is planned next week.

Saridewi Djamani, 45, was sentenced to death in 2018 for trafficking about 31 grams (1 ounce) of diamorphine, or pure heroin, the Central Narcotics Bureau said. It said the amount was “sufficient to feed the addiction of about 370 abusers for a week.”

Saudi F-15SA Fighter Jet Crashed During Training

RIYADH, Jul 27 (NNN-SPA) – An F-15SA fighter jet, of the Royal Saudi Air Force, crashed during a training session yesterday, killing the crew on board.

Turki Al-Malki, spokesman of the Saudi Defence Ministry, said that, the crash happened near the King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait, around 800 kilometres south-west of the capital, Riyadh.

Al-Malki said that, an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the crash.

The F-15SA is a two-seater fighter jet. Saudi Arabia has not revealed the exact number of those killed in the crash.

USA: Florida woman who stole nearly $3 million from Holocaust survivor gets over 4 years in prison

NEW YORK (AP) — A Florida woman who drained an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor’s life savings by posing as a love interest and then lived lavishly off the $2.8 million she got was sentenced Thursday to over four years in prison.

Peaches Stergo, 36, of Champions Gate, Florida, was described by U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos as “unspeakably cruel” and motivated by greed as he announced the sentence in Manhattan federal court.

Russia says a Ukrainian drone was shot down outside Moscow

A Ukrainian drone was shot down early Friday outside Moscow, Russia’s defense ministry said. It was the third drone strike or attempt on the capital region this month.

The ministry said there were no injuries or damage in the early morning incident. It didn’t give details about where the drone was shot down, but said it took place in the Moscow Oblast, a region that surrounds but doesn’t include the city itself.

The shootdown adds to concern about Moscow’s vulnerability to attack as the war drags into its 18th month.
