ALGIERS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced a new caretaker government amid weeks of mass protests demanding his resignation, the country's national television said on Sunday night.

Prime Minister Noureddine Bedoui, who took office on March 11, will head the new administration, the state TV reported.

26 Mar 2019; DW: Algerian army chief of staff Ahmed Gaid Salah on Tuesday called for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to be removed from office by using articles of the constitution.

The North African country has been rocked by more than a month of protests calling for Bouteflika to step down in order to pave the way for a democratic overhaul of Algeria's political system.

ALGIERS, March 1 (Xinhua) -- As many as 56 police officers and seven citizens were injured during Friday's massive anti-government protest in Algeria, local police department said in a statement.

Despite peaceful marches, the demonstrators were intruded by groups of troublemakers and rubbers, who stole money from a fuel station in downtown Algiers.

They also set fire on two vehicles and vandalized facades of a state-run bank and Djazair Hotel, near the neighborhood of El Mouradia, where the presidency's headquarters were located.

ALGIERS, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Algeria and France on Sunday signed a new convention for the extradition of criminals as part of the judicial and security cooperation between the two countries.

The agreement was signed by visiting French Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet and her Algerian counterpart Tayeb Louh in the capital Algiers, Algeria Press Service (APS) reported.

It covers cooperation in the areas of mutual legal assistance, counter-terrorism and information exchange, APS said.
