India: Sikkim wants Centre to withdraw notification opening up peaks

Gangtok/Kolkata, Aug 27 (PTI) The Sikkim government has urged the Centre to withdraw its notification which opened up 24 peaks of the state to mountaineers, a top official said.

The Centre has recently allowed mountaineering and trekking in 137 peaks across the country, including 24 peaks in Sikkim, in a bid to boost tourism.

Despite tensions, Pakistan stands ready to open Kartarpur Corridor

Islamabad, Aug 23 (PTI) Pakistan on Friday said that despite tensions with India, it stands ready to open the Kartarpur Corridor and welcome the Sikh pilgrims to take part in celebrations in connection with the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said this while speaking to a delegation of civil society and parliamentarians of Afghanistan, which is currently visiting Pakistan for the 'Track-II dialogue, Beyond Boundaries'.

Cuba gets over 3 million tourists since January

HAVANA, Aug 17 (NNN-TELESUR) — Despite the United States’ attempts to limit tourism in Cuba, the country has seen three million foreign visitors between Jan. 1 and Aug. 15, Canadians making up the bulk of tourists to the Caribbean island. 

The Cuban Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) said in a statement that the arrival of the three million international travelers was “achieved despite campaigns … directed by the U.S. government to prevent the flow of tourists to our country.”

Visa-free travel starts between Turkey, Russia

7 Aug 2019; MEMO: Visa-free travel between Russia and Turkey goes into effect starting today, said Turkish Foreign Ministry in a statement on Wednesday, Anadolu reports.

The measure is valid on a reciprocal basis for official and service passport holders as well as for international transport drivers, the statement said.

It also includes Turkish special passport holders.

India: Rakesh Gangwal flags serious governance issues at IndiGo

New Delhi, Jul 9 (PTI) Locked in a bitter battle with fellow co-founder Rahul Bhatia, IndiGo promoter Rakesh Gangwal has alleged serious governance lapses at the company, saying even a "paan ki dukaan" (betel shop) would have managed matters with more grace.

Gangwal, who along with his affiliates holds around 37 per cent stake in InterGlobe Aviation, said that the company has "started veering off" from the core principles and values of governance that made the company what it is today.

UNESCO names ancient Babylon city a World Heritage Site

6 July 2019; DW: The UN Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Friday designated the ancient city of Babylon as a World Heritage Site, recognizing its "outstanding value to humanity."

"The inscription represents a recognition of the outstanding human value and the unique significance of this ancient city and of the civilizations of Mesopotamia and their contributions to humanity," the Iraqi government said in a tweet.

India: SpiceJet plane overshoots runway on landing

Surat, Jun 30 (PTI) A SpiceJet plane Sunday overshot the runway while landing at the Surat Airport, although none of the passengers and crew members on board were hurt in the incident, an airport official said.

The incident, which occurred around 8.15 pm, was a result of heavy rain and wind, the official said.

"A SpiceJet flight from Bhopal to Surat overshot runway at the airport here due to heavy rainfall and wind. All the 43 passengers and four crew members are safe and they are being handled by the SpiceJet officials," Surat airport director S K Panigrahi said.

Flights of Georgian airlines to Russia to be suspended from July 8 - Transport Ministry

MOSCOW, June 22. /TASS/: Flights of Georgian airlines to Russia will be suspended from July 8, according to the Russian Transport Ministry.

"The reason for the suspension of flights is the need to ensure a sufficient level of aviation security, as well as overdue debts for air navigation activities before State ATM Corporation," the Ministry said.

The total amount of Georgia’s debt for air navigation services is slightly below $793,000. At the same time, another 592,200 rubles ($9,391) of debt have not been repaid since 2008.
