Rwanda names 20 endangered baby mountain gorillas

KIGALI, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda on Friday gave names to 20 baby gorillas born over the last 12 months in an annual gorilla conservation event held at the foothills of the volcanoe mountains in the Northern Province.

The annual baby gorilla naming ceremony, commonly known as Kwita Izina, was held for the 18th time.

Rwanda, Congo leaders to meet in Angola amid tensions

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) — Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi will meet with his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame in Angola amid rising tensions between the two neighboring countries, a Congolese government spokesman said.

The two leaders on Wednesday will discuss bilateral relations and the armed conflict in eastern Congo, where M23 rebels last month took a town near the Uganda border, Congo spokesman Patrick Muyaya told The Associated Press Tuesday.

CHOGM: Commonwealth ends summit with call for action on climate change, trade: Rwanda

KIGALI, June 26 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The newly-expanded Commonwealth made broad commitments on Saturday to address climate change and boost trade, concluding a summit aimed at shoring up the relevance of a group that evolved from the British empire.

The club, whose 56 members range from India to the tiny Pacific island nation of Nauru, covers some 2.5 billion people or about one-third of the world’s population. It presents itself as a network for cooperation, but critics say it needs to carve out a more concrete role and be less of a talking shop.

UK: Boris Johnson seeks to stay in power until the mid-2030s

KIGALI, June 25 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Saturday he aims to remain in power until the middle of the next decade, despite calls for him to quit, which would make him the country's longest continuously serving leader in 200 years.

Earlier this month, Johnson survived a vote of confidence by Conservative lawmakers in which 41% of his parliamentary colleagues voted to oust him, and he is under investigation for intentionally misleading parliament.

Boris Johnson says he fears Ukraine will be coerced to make a 'bad peace'

KIGALI, June 25 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Saturday that he feared Ukraine could face pressure to agree a peace deal with Russia that was not in its interests, due to the economic consequences of the war in Europe.

"Too many countries are saying this is a European war that is unnecessary ... and so the pressure will grow to encourage - coerce, maybe - the Ukrainians to a bad peace," he told broadcasters in the Rwandan capital Kigali, where he is attending a Commonwealth summit.

Rwanda: Prince Charles expresses sorrow over slavery in Commonwealth speech

KIGALI, June 24 (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Charles expressed deep sorrow over slavery in a speech to Commonwealth leaders in Rwanda on Friday and acknowledged that the roots of the organisation lay in a painful period of history.

The Commonwealth, a club of 54 countries that evolved from the British Empire, encompasses about a third of humanity and presents itself as a network of equal partners, but some member states have been calling for a reckoning with the colonial past. 

CHOGM gets underway in Rwanda

KIGALI, June 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) kicked off in Kigali Sunday, with the youth at the centre of deliberations on Day I.

The Meeting, which was initially due to take place in 2020 before it was postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will last a week with dozens of sessions scheduled at different venues across the city.

Rwanda is the youngest member of the 54-nation community having joined in 2009, six years after it launched its bid.

Rwanda: Choice of Commonwealth Secretary-General expected in Kigali

KIGALI, June 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Heads of Government are expected to decide on the next substantive Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Secretariat in Kigali this week.

Although the decision is made by consensus, should the leaders decide not to reappoint the incumbent Baroness Patricia Scotland — who has served her first term for six years instead of four — a vote will take place. The pandemic forced the postponement of an election in 2020.

A Commonwealth Secretary-General can serve a maximum of two terms of four years each.

Rwanda launches construction of China-supported power plant

KIGALI, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The Rwandan government has launched the construction of a 43.5 MW power plant expected to boost the country's efforts to ensure universal access to electricity by 2024.

The China-supported Nyabarongo II Hydropower Plant is a multipurpose development project located on the main stream of Nyabarongo River, at the junction of Rwanda's Northern and Southern provinces.

Rwanda ends outdoor face masks wearing mandate as COVID-19 situation improves

KIGALI, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The use of face masks will no longer be mandatory in outdoor spaces in Rwanda, according to a communique of the Cabinet of Rwanda.

"Wearing face masks is no longer mandatory, however, people are encouraged to wear masks indoors," said the communique issued by the Office of the Prime Minister late Friday.

The public is urged to get frequently tested while continuing to observe preventive measures.
